Tokyo - help plan my trip

Have 5 nights in Tokyo (incl day of arrival at 2:30pm). Want to spend a days at Disney - thinking of doing the first two nights there. Hotel suggestions in Tokyo Bay? Then three nights in Tokyo? Hotel suggestions? Itinerary suggestions for the remaining days? Thanks!

How much $$ do you have for Tokyo Bay hotel? Hotel Mira Costa is incredible, one of the finest hotels I have stayed in and right inside Disney Sea,GREAT theme in the hotel, very elegant, but pricey. KimJapan on here likes the Hilton. There is also the Sheraton.

How much $$ do you have for a Tokyo hotel?

Itinerary depends on your likes/dislikes, you need to tell us about yourself and who is traveling w/you. Have you done any research at all to know what is available in Tokyo, and what might interest you?

Thanks for the response. It is me and my husband travelling without our kids. We are in our early thirties and from NYC (been to Disney World a bunch though). We have money to spend but I like a good deal and don't want to spend just to spend - it has to be worth it. I can get a $340 rate (incl breakfast) from my company at the Conrad in Tokyo? Starting to research that hotel. We know we want to do disney but beyond that not sure. Thinking maybe Mt. Fuji/bullet train another day but not sure if we should take an organized tour, etc. Just starting our research but going in April.

Ok, that helps.

Disney: Since you like Disney, I would seriously try to spring for Mira Costa. It blew us away. Check out the pics and reviews online, and if you are interested, I can send you our review of the hotel and Disney Sea. But we had to book several months in advance for early April 2005, so if you want to do that, you should call RIGHT NOW and book. Ask me if you want info on how to book, as you have to call them and it is somewhat complicated (re what nu,ber to call from the U.S., rooms and where they are in the hotel and views, etc.) but worth it. Very popular hotel and they get booked up very early.

There are a lot of great hotels in Tokyo. I have stayed at the Westin in Ebisu on points twice and loved it, but it is pricey when paying. I have not stayed at the Conrad Hilton. Search for "Hilton Tokyo" here and see what comes up.

There is a Hilton at Tokyo Bay also close to Disney. Can you get a good rate there also?

I believe KimJapan was going to try out the Conrad last year- if she sees this hopefully she will respond.

There is also a Hilton in Odawara in Hakone (close to Fuji, in view at some points, lovely area). If you can get a deal at Hiltons, it might be worth checking that out.

You should do some research into what is available to do and see in Tokyo. get an idea of what looks interesting to you, and then come back and ask more pointed questions.

Try these sites:

Are you on the way to somewhere else, is that why you are only going to Tokyo in Japan? Because April is the best month for other parts of Japan, south of Tokyo.

I agree with emd...Disney Sea is great. We've been to Disneyland and Disney Sea 3 times and loved each time. Disney Sea is unique, and a blast.

We stay at the Tokyo Bay Hilton because we have points and can stay free. It is a fine hotel, not special, but fine. The Square restaurant is very good for dinner...kind of a made to order buffet by station concept with very good food.

The Miracosta is special, and if it's in your budget, stay there. You do need to stay in a room there that overlooks the harbor to get the best view, and those rooms are pretty expensive - Porto Paradiso side is what you want. http://www.disneyhotels.jp/dhm/index_e.html

In Tokyo, you are spoiled for choice for hotels. Like emd says, we stayed at the Conrad last year to try it, and while it is impressive as far as looks go, we found it to be cold in atmosphere. Staff was aloof and too cool with one exception...a restaurant manager, who left to open the Ritz Carlton right after our stay. Location is good, with easy access to subway. The in house restaurants are good, but you pay a steep price for dining. There are restaurants in the nearby shopping centers and office complexes that are more reasonable.

Were we to stay in Tokyo again, I'd opt for the Peninsula or one of the Four Seasons for a splurge. Otherwise, again for points, I'd opt for the Hilton in Shinjuku over the Conrad next time, as it is friendlier. Wherever you stay, be careful of room size, as the rooms can be incredibly small in the less upscale places.

I've only been to have a spa treatment at the new Hilton in Odawara. It is not close to Hakone (mountain side from Odawara), but rather in the middle of nowhere near a small station a few stops after Odawara. Probably a good place if you just want to relax with a good book to read or play a golf, but personally I would be bored.

I have stayed at the Okura hotel in Kyoto and really loved it. Very good service, good food offerings, very nice decor, very classy. I get offerings from them and have joined their members club (free online) in anticipation of staying at their other hotels and returning to the one in Kyoto. I don't know the one in Tokyo but I believe it is the flagship hotel for that hotel group. It is a 5 star hotel, has an indoor pool, is adjoined to 2 shopping areas. I don't think you could go wrong there. Tripadvisor reviews are outstanding.

The ANA is an Intercontinental hotel so should hopefully live up to the good standards of that hotel group. All 4 hotels are in or close to Roppongi and AKasaka so do some research on Roppongi and Akasaka and see if the area appeals to you. There is a lot if info online about those areas. Akasaka area has lots of embassies. I went out to eat in that area once (at the Ninja restaurant) and it seemed like a nice area to walk in at night, lots of restaurants and people on the streets but not crazy busy like Shibuya or other areas at night. The Okura hotel's website has a very good map that shows location of the hotel to several metro stations and other places.

My company usually book me into Okura. Two drawbacks are 1) it is not close to metro (5min down or up steep hill to Kamiyacho), 2) non-smoking rooms seem to be in shorter supply.

ANA's main advantage is direct access to Narita via limousine bus. Though I would check the room size. It's about 5-10min walk to metro (on Nanboku Line? through underground passageway).

I would consider both as 4.0-4.5 stars. I haven't stayed at Grand Hyatt, but if it is the one in the middle of new roppongi complex, I'm tempted to try.

I've stayed at both the Conrad and Grand Hyatt. Both were extremely pleasant and comfortable hotels, with excellent service and rooms, but I much prefer the location of the Grand Hyatt.

The Grand Hyatt is in Roppongi Hills, in the midst of lots of shopping, stores, and restaurants. It's on the edge of an especially pleasant neighborhood, Azabu, which is a wonderful place to go for a walk. The GH is connected directly to the subway (Hibiya and Oedo lines).

The Conrad is also right at a subway station. However, I found the area around the Conrad to be really unwelcoming: lots of streets and overpasses to navigate, but nothing terribly interesting in terms of shops and restaurants. The Conrad is within walking distance (15-20 mins?) of the Ginza, and it does have a very nice lounge. Still, I'd go back to the GH, but probably not to the Conrad.

W9London: yes, the Grand Hyatt is the one you're thinking of in Roppongi.
