Wally Finally flies the Airbus A380

Greetings from Singapore. Monday night I flew from LAX to Tokyo and on to Singapore on a Singapore Airlines A380. What a beautiful aircraft! I had a window seat near the back of the upper deck. There was a nice storage compartment between myself and the window. The other seat was empty on both flights so I had plenty of room to stretch out and relax. Hot towels before take-off at LAX and again before landing in Singapore. Ice cream on two flights. I walked down the steps at the back of the plane to see the first deck with the 3x4x3 seating. Upstairs economy was 2x4x2. (I asked the flight attendant during the flight and she said, sure.)

I watched the airshow on the video screen during landing and it appeared that the speed of the aircraft was down to 150 mph two minutes before landing in Singapore. When the plane took off, it seemed like it was barely moving.

The flight was rather bumpy and several times the flight attendants had to sit down and stop service. Babies had to be removed from the basinets, too. There was a very strong headwind and the plane arrived late in Tokyo but arrived early in Singapore. The service was excellent but I had to cry when I saw the flight attendant pouring an almost full bottle of wine down the toilet before landing. What a waste, but the toilet smelled nice when I went in.

The plane arrived in Singapore at 2:45 a.m. in Singapore and I got a day room for six hours at the airport. I also saw the swimming pool which they claim is the only airport swimming pool past security in the world.

I purchased a beer at the top of the Marina Bay Hotel on the 57th floor. Note that beer is cheaper on a U.S. airline. I also took a ride on the Singapore Flyer, a larger version of the London Eye. The London Eye seems higher because the buildings in London are not as tall as in Singapore.

Off to Bali on Saturday. Any suggestions?

>>>Greetings from Singapore. Monday night I flew from LAX to Tokyo and on to Singapore on a Singapore Airlines A380. What a beautiful aircraft!<<<

Oh yes, couldn't agree more. Love flying those SQ A380s; in my case, mostly SIN-HKG and SIN-NRT sectors for work and occasional brief holiday.

Now, many thanks for the thoughtful review and glad the Girls took fine care of you. (No complaints from me, flying SIA over the years.)

As for Bali, the following could be a bit of a budget buster, but have always enjoyed the Four Seasons Sayan property. (And, flying SQ SIN-DPS, naturally.)

Thanks again and hope you enjoy your stay in our cherished home of Singapore. Warm wishes to you and all from beloved Bangkok, Thailand.

I always love your posts wally, and the part about crying over wine in the toilet is so "wally."

Thanks.

It was my second flight. In May I flew to Tokyo and it was suppose to be on the A380 but they waited and used a 777-300 ER.

I spoke to someone who said he used 50,000 CO miles and upgraded to business from LAX to SIN with no cash. Seems too good to be true.

Yes, 50K is the official amount for Star Alliance Upgrade. No cash needed. But only from Y or B fare. Also, SQ usually doesn't allow that on their 380/77W/345 products. Since LAX-NRT-SIN is switching from 744 to 380, that option may not exist anymore.
