Time needed between flights?

My son will be studying in England in spring and is taking a quick trip to Athens before he returns home to the U.S. If his flight from Athens lands at Heathrow at 10:05am and his flight out of Heathrow takes off at 11:40, will that leave him enough time to catch that flight? They are different airlines. Thanks!

How much time should I allow? And how does that change if it is the same airline?

if they are different airlines, but one ticket & airline partners, then maybe. And maybe only if he can checkin all the way to the US from Athens, and his bag checked through.

If this is different tickets and he has to retrieve baggage, get to the 2nd airline before checkin cutoff, which might be 60 or 90min, then no way no how.

It doesn't matter so much whether they are different airlines; the most important questions are whether it's the same terminal at LHR and whether the two airlines are partners.

For example, if you're connecting from Aegean Airlines to United airlines, I'd feel OK with 1:35 (assuming it's 1 ticket) because they are both Star Alliance and both use T2.

This is a different trip so a seperate ticket. His ticket London-->Omaha is the returning flight from his study abroad. He leaves Heathrow via United Airlines at 11:40am and we are trying to schedule his short trip to Athens before he comes home, so we don't know the terminal. The flight to and from Athens we were looking at was British Airlines. Maybe the smart thing to do is just fly back to London the day before, I was just trying to help him save having another night in a hotel.

Right...just finding another hotel in London, etc. but I think you are right, it seems safer to just get back to London the night before. Thank you all.

He can priceline a hotel at LHR and likely get it very cheap -- probably $50-$75, definitely less than $100 including taxes and fees.

Is he flying to Athens from LHR? If so, they have left luggage in all the terminals. Not cheap - £10 per item per day.

Or -- if he does stay at a Heathrow area hotel his last night before flying home, perhaps he could arrange to leave his luggage there to be picked up later when he stays there. Might be a fee if it is more than a few days.
