Delta serving UA passengers???
DS is coming home from BKK on Thursday this week. His UA itin shows a DELTA flight from NRT-BKK 'confirmed' as well as his UA seat 'confirmed.' Is Delta picking up some of the slack on this route now?? I wonder if the reconfiguring of the 777s has something to do with this. I posted the Q on flyer talk, but if someone here has any idea, I'd sure appreciate it. DS has been warned that he just may be flying Delta Thursday morning to NRT, and at 5:40am... Aaaarrrgghhh... that's a tough one. He is star gold, and will be checking in w/UA with three 70lb bags. Delta will have to take them, won't they?
Thanks.
Carol

Delta merged and took over with Northwest over two years ago and these routes have been around for a long time with them.I don't know about the bags but I didn't think that any bag could be over 50lbs without paying etra charges unless it was going to Brazil?

How did he book the itinerary?
DL 284 flies BKK-NRT with an 0540 departure. I have no idea why UA would book him on a DL flight, since they don't codeshare.
UA is not a whole lot better schedule-wise. Leaves BKK at 0605 (only 25 minutes later), but does get to NRT 10 minutes before DL 284!

I ended up calling the UA 1K line. The flight DS was originally booked on is cancelled (Mechanical) so they have reassigned him to fly on Delta. The 1K agent assured me that his 3 heavy bags would go on Delta without problems. Since he is Star Alliance Gold level, he gets 3 70 lb bags. The 1K agent said that would still be true, even if he flies on Delta. We shall see. He will have to save his boarding pass and apply for the miles. I could not get a seat assignment for him, so he may be riding in a middle seat for 6+ hours... not my kind of fun.

Hi Carol,
Firstly, I apologise for using this thread to ask for a personal favor but I thought it would be the best way to get a message to you without drawing too much attention to it.
I have a 9 year old "Bookworm" son who has just found out that Amazon has released a new Kindle "Fire" with a color screen and ability to do much more than the previous version that he recently broke. I promised to try and get him one for his birthday in late November, but whilst trying to place a pre-order on one and a matching case on my Amazon account, I received a message on screen that they are only shipping them within the USA until further notice.
My request is, if it is not too much trouble, if I can get it shipped to you and then I will get Fedex to collect it from you and forward it to us.
My email is [email protected] , please send me a message if this would be alright and tell me what address it would be best to send it to and have it collected from.
I will think nothing of it if you dont feel comfortable doing this. I totally understand that the request is a little unusual from someone that you only know from an internet forum but at this stage, it seems like it is the only way to get one of these in time for either his birthday or christmas. The previous model has only just got into shops in Australia last month. I bought the old one for him on ebay for almost 3 times the Amazon price just to get one for Christams day last year.
Regards,
Shane

Back to the subject at hand... DS made it home from BKK. He checked with UA (their request) upon arriving at BKK airport. The UA agent walked him over to the Delta counter to check in. He had to pay up front $450 for his 3rd bag (which would be free w/UA as a star gold). The UA agent said to pay it and they would 'deal with that' at a later point. Not sure yet what that means... hopefully a voucher in that amount good toward paying for his next BKK flight!!s
All of his bags made it home. That was a concern of his, since he would be switching from Delta to UA in NRT.
He has two 'thank you' cards in hand. One is for the bag issue and one is for the cancelled flight issue. He has not yet claimed his 'gift' on either one of these, as he first wants to call the Premier Exec line to get (1) his money back on the bag charge, and (2) his miles for the flight on Delta that would have earned him 2500+ miles on UA. First the phone call, and THEN do the gift (thank you) cards. Can't blame him for holding off on the cards, where it says you agree to 'terms and conditions' (which include NO future attempt to collect money on the baggage fee???)
Will keep this thread updated.

He can hold off on the "appreciation" compensation but I can't see how that could possibly affect the other issues. He could go to the web address and enter in the flight/coupon info to see what his options are without committing. Should be a $$$ discount on any UA flight OR a % discount on an international flight, OR bonus miles. Might want to use the discounts to buy a ticket before the luggage issue is resolved.
For the luggage issue, I would expect a refund of the charge - not a UA credit.
I would wager that he won't get EQMs or RDMs for the flight.
There was/is a thread at ft where people post(ed) what their compensation was for different events. There probably are posts there by now about the comps that people were offered for the exact same flight. There might even a thread about that flight.

Bill, I got an appreciation card myself, for which I went in and claimed the 4500 miles offered. I'm 'low' on FF miles so I'll take them over the 10% or other $$ coupon offered. Miles are easy. Using the coupons isn't that easy for me.
I'll have to look on ft for the discussion. I posted a thread on this issue, but no one pointed me in the direction of yet another discussion of the same flight from BKK to NRT. What I have read though, would indicate that UA will give him those miles since he had no choice in the rerouting on Delta! He needs those miles to make 1K.

I would expect he will get the EQMs and RDMs. We had a trip a few years ago where our United flight was cancelled due to a mechanical and we were rerouted back to the US on Qantas. I submitted a form and called Mileage Plus customer service; no problem getting the mileage credit.
