Kelly,
I am sorry I can't answer your question about insurance. When I stayed at CC Africa accomodations, I did not book my trip through them, so I don't know what their policy is. I did have insurance, but that was primarily because I booked 6 months in advance, my trip was a long one, and I felt more comfortable carrying the insurance. They never asked to see the insurance, so I don't honestly know if they would have required it or not in order to stay at their camps. On my upcoming trip I am staying in WS accomodations, and they do require the insurance, all of it, so I obtained it. You might find the answer if you search this board, or you might post a query with trip insurance in the title. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Thanks Dana, I think I will take my chances and if they insist in the next week, I will get it. I haven't used my medical insurance for anything more than yearly doc visits, but as soon as I say that, I will be the next woman to get stomped on my an elephant. But don't worry...I don't jog.

I booked our Kenya/Tanzania trip through ccafrica and they didn't require any insurance. In fact, they had a rather flexible policy if you needed to reschedule the trip. Wilderness Safaris requires that you have evacuation insurance but that's all. We'll be staying in Wilderness properties next week!

Sept 1 - via JNB

* Airport Sun Intercontinental
* The Hide Safari Camp
* Victoria Falls Safari Lodge
* Duma Tau
* Kwetsani
* Londolozi Granite Suites #1 requested

My husband set the itinerary and CC Africa made it happen. We expect to bring items for clinics, schools and mechanical equipment to support the watering hole program in Hwange - does anyone know what we should expect from border/customs @ Zimbabwe? Wondering if we'll have to pay a VAT or something. Lovely to see all the posts!

30 days to go before leaving, so I'm entitling myself to post here.

Off in mid-August for a week in Kenya, split between Il Moran and Shompole. As an appetizer, I'll have a few days in Paris on the way over. And then Stockholm for dessert on the way back.

Hi Cindy,

I'm interested in mobile camping in Botswana and will look forward to hearing about your experiences. Who are you using?

Late May 2008 to early August 2008 I'll be at Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge in Namibia as the visiting astronomer. After that I will travel for two or three weeks visiting friends at lodges and camps in South Africa and Tanzania. I hope to be able to do a gorilla walk as well. Well, at least it's less than a year away now.

Thanks, Sandy!

Sharon - I did a trip similar to this in Oct05 with Gametrails. On that trip the lead photographer, Charles Glatzer, met someone on the plane from Maun to Joburg and I think they put this trip together. So I don't know who the ground operator is. I'll know more when I get back and will let you know then.

Hi Michael,

Looks like a fantastic trip!!! and will await eagerly to hear from you about all the animals (most especially the two cheetah boys). The ele and buffalo herds were already spectacular in June....can't even imagine what September is like!

Here's my agenda so far:

Kenya Safari

September 14: Flight from NYC @ 6:35 PM to London
September 15: Flight from London @ 10:00 AM to Nairobi - land at 8:45 PM (almost a full day of flying)
September 16: Safari Day 1 - Nairobi
September 17: Safari Day 2 - Samburu Game Reserve
September 18: Safari Day 3 - Samburu Game Reserve
September 19: Safari Day 4 – Samburu Game Reserve/Naru Moru
September 20: Safari Day 5 - Lake Nakuru
September 21: Safari Day 7 - Masai Mara
September 22: Safari Day 8 - Masai Mara
September 23: Safari Day 9 - Masai Mara/Nairobi

Mt Kilimanjaro Hike

September 24: Depart Nairobi to Moshi for my Mt Kilimanjaro hike (I think I’m going to take a bus from Nairobi; need to book one)

I have major reservations about the short timeframe of the trip. Most places recommend taking one more day on the mountain (I think on Horombo or Kibo) to acclimatize and have a better chance of avoiding altitude sickness. I’ve read conflicting reports and saw a Nova special on altitude sickness and that Ginko may prevent it. I’ll be taking plenty of it on my trip to better my chances of getting to the summit.

September 25: Kilimanjaro Day 1 - Mandara hut (2,750m)
September 26: Kilimanjaro Day 2 - Horombo Hut (3,720m)
September 27: Kilimanjaro Day 3 - Kibo Hut (4,703m)
September 28: Kilimanjaro Day 4 - Summit (I wake up at midnight, climb to summit for sunrise, then descend back to Horombo Hut at 5 the next day – seems like 16 hours of hiking that day with little sleep the night before)
September 29: Kilimanjaro Day 5 - Kilimanjaro Descent and night in hotel in Moshi

Lamu Island

September 30: Flight from JRO to NBO @ 9:00 AM (due to my compressed schedule, I need to book flight via Kenya Airlines back to Nairobi; the tricky thing here is that they oversell flights and if you don’t call in and reconfirm your ticket 72 hours prior to departure, they kick you off the flight! I’ll be on the mountain with probably no cell service, so I’m not sure how I’m going to do that yet. I’ll have to find someone to do it either back here in the states or in Africa, perhaps my tour operator).
Flight from NBO to LAU (Lamu) @ 2:00 PM. Chill on Lamu that afternoon
October 1: Lamu Island
October 2: Lamu Island Dhow Island trip - (I’ll be spending the day drifting through the mangroves and sailing to the coral reefs for some Indian Ocean snorkelling with a BBQ lunch on the beach)
October 3: Flight from LAU to NBO @ 2:00 PM. Flight from NBO to LHR @ 11:30 PM

Oktoberfest

October 4: LHR to MUC @ 10:00 AM (this starts my first day of Oktoberfest)
October 5: Oktoberfest Day 2
October 6: Oktoberfest Day 3
October 7: Flight from MUC to LHR @ 4:15 PM then flight from LHR to JFK @ 8:00 PM

This is a tight schedule and I see some problems that could occur between Kili and Lamu as there’s only one flight out of Kili that will connect me to the next flight to Lamu that day. If I miss it, get delayed or bumped, my trip to Lamu will be cut off by a day or might have to be cancelled.

I also have clothing issues as I will be living out of a duffel bag for almost a month and can’t bring a ton of clothes as space is a premium. So while I don’t mind wearing dirty, dusty kahki’s the entire time in Africa (I also need warm weather clothing for Kili) and washing them in the bush, I do want to look somewhat civilized and fashionable in Munich since I’ll be back in civilization. I need to figure out what to pack (or should I just mail clothes) how much of what to bring, and figure out how they won’t get wet/dirty/ruined in Africa in the bottom of a duffel bag for 2.5 weeks. Maybe I’ll buy clothes in Germany at a Zara or H&M?
