Botswana in different perspective - pictures

Hello everyone,

When people are posting pictures of their safari, one wants to see lions, ...

Well I posted my favorite gallery so far but Simba won't be present this time.

Have a look and judge for yourself:

EXCELLENT!

Great images of some truly difficult birds to shoot. You obviously have put in the time and invested wisely in good lenses.
Nice stuff, appreciated and thanks for sharing.

Johan, having tried to do what you did on my last trip I know just how hard it is. Getting the right light, background and pose is a challenge that you met very, very well.
Especially enjoyed the self portrait but did you get it skimming?
Regards,
Eric

But where are all the bird in flight shots? (only joking).

What do you consider was the most pleasing to get?

You've done it again, Johan! What wonderful photos. They took a while to download, but I'd wait twice as long knowing it was you. The skimmers are my favourite birds. When I released my husband's ashes into the Okavango River in October 2000 it was by a small sandbank where the skimmers were nesting, and they flew overhead calling. I shall be back in October, my second trip this year.

I am just one of your many admirers.

Thanks all for watching and your kind comments.

Most of these pictures were taken in 2007-2008 (with one exception : the arnot's chat)

In terms of photography, I find it quite challenging to take good pictures of some of these birds. It isn't as easy as it looks.

I was most happy with the following ones:

- Swamp boubou;
- Crimson-breasted shrike;
- Lesser jacana;
- Pygmy goose.

On my next safaris, I am targeting the following ones:

- Purple gallinule;
- Black-chested snake-eagle;
- Half-collared kingfisher;
- African finfoot.

Skimmer: Well I got pictures while it is skimming but for you who don't know, my nickname comes from a pride of lions, based at Duba Plains.

Best regards,

Johan

Johan,

If you haven't been there... the lower Zambezi is great for Gallinule. After quite a few sightings, I had the chance to get close to a breeding pair while tiger fishing from the Royal Zambezi Lodge, they knew where the nesting site was. Sadly fishing and photography don't go together so missed a classic opportunity.

And, of all your shots the one that struck me the most was the crimson breasted shrike

Mkhonzo,

Thanks for the advice - I have been once in the Lower Zambezi and I found the birding there excellent.

Johan,

I don't post often, usually visit and read. However, I was at Lebala in May 06 when you were there and subsequently saw some of the photos you took at the time - with a great deal of envy - tiny lion cubs in the tree and the wild dogs. Several times I have read that you may be producing a book. If this is so, when please? I have always enjoyed watching birds - we have a great many that visit the house at home in Australia - and those in this collection would be wonderful in print. I was also able to check some of my photos against a couple and have now identified a couple of lbj's that had me beaten
