When you drive under the dense canopy of foliage at the entrance of Largo Lodge you'll feel like you've gone back in time. Vintage 1950s cottages are tucked amid 3 acres of palm trees, sea grapes, and orchids. Baby-boomer couples seem right at home here in rooms that might call to mind places they stayed as kids. (Young children aren't allowed here, however.) Accommodations—surprisingly spacious—feature small kitchen and dining areas and large screened porches. A lavish swath of bay frontage is perfect for communing with the friendly squirrels and ibises. For swimming, you'll need to drive about 1 mi to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Pros: lush grounds; great sunset views; affordable rates. Cons: no pool or beach; some traffic noise outdoors.
