Really SHORT trip to Napa

I am considering an overnight trip to the Napa Valley area in two weeks. Would fly in early on a Saturday morning and return on a red-eye Sunday night. Sort of a mileage run.

I want to do some shopping at the outlets in the area and purchase some wine for XMAS gifts. I've been to SF before but would not be staying in the city. Want to stay pretty close to the outlets and wineries.

Any suggestions on a hotel that would be in close proximity to both the outlet mall(s) and someplace where I can purchase wine? Not interested in luxury, just a very clean hotel and comfortable bed.

Thanks for your insight!

Try the Napa Marriot on PriceLine.
Some lodgings will want 2 nights on the weekend.

Thanks for the tips.

I thought about renting a car but not sure I want to do that either. Thinking about a shared van to a hotel in the area. From what I've been reading, Napa seems like a town you can walk around and have dinner in and feel safe. Of course I could cab it if I need to. This way I can shop one day and wine taste the other. After which, I can leave the driving to somone else.

The Embassy seems like a good choice. Very close to the outlets. I now need to research where to do wine tasting.

My thought is wine tasting on Saturday afternoon, not sure where or how to do that without a car. So, I'll do some additional research. Relax Sunday morning and have breakfast. Then head for an afternoon of shopping. Once done, I will head to the airport.

Does this sound doable?

Any thoughts on whether or not I really need a rental car? If I take a ride the the hotel (likely Embassy), will I be able to get around OK?

I was in Nappa a few months ago for a short trip. From what I remember and after refreshing my memory with some help from Mapquest, you should be fine without a car for shopping as long as you can carry what you buy. Your hotel is pretty close to the outlets and less than a mile from the downtown stores. As for getting around for wine tastings, you'll definitely need some sort of vehicle. One option you could choose is to go on a wine tasting tour that provides transportation. There are some companies that drive people around to different wineries for tastings (sorry I don't know of a specific one to recommend). You probably wouldn't be able to pick and choose which wineries you went to or how long you stayed at each one, but on the other hand, you wouldn't have to worry about getting lost or drinking and driving. I think a lot of people find that during the tastings, they drink more wine than they realize in a short period of time. Also some of the wineries that I went to were pretty liberal pourers at the tasting. Hope this helps

Embassy is a good choice for proximity and safety. I'd call the hotel about the wine tasting part. They have concierge services there. Otherwise, I'd recommend Platypus Tours at www.platypus.com = we thought Don was great and he will take 2 to 12 people, so it's small and intimate and you can join a group easily. It's usually more fun to taste with other people.
