Ogunquit: best inn?
We're planning a trip for end of May, early June. Love the area around Camden/Acadia, but think it's probably better to stay farther south early in the season. I'm hoping knowledgeable folks can recommend a wonderful inn (we don't prefer B&B's-- prefer more privacy) in the Ogunquit area. Cost not impt. What's impt is excellent/spacious accommodations, plus very quiet and good privacy. Would love a great view also, but peace and quiet highest priority. Thanks very much!

Thanks for responding, cybor. But when I checked Trip Advisor, I found that Cliff House got truly hideous reviews. I know that posters on that site can be pretty tough-- but the details this time were convincing. I hope I'll get more in-put. Again, thanks for answering.

I stayed at the Cliff House last summer for wedding. There are 3 buildings and the oldest of the buildings is a bit of a dump so it may explain the bad reviews. The other 2 buildings are nice (I was in rooms in all 3). They have a nice spa and gorgeous views, every room has an ocean facing balcony. The other hotel that's popular in Ogunquit is the Anchorage.

Again, I very much appreciate the responses. But I'm wondering if there's something that's not motel-like in the area, i.e. something more along the lines of a fine inn. I've stayed in the kind of thing I'm looking for in the Bar Harbor area, and I just assumed there'd be comparable properties farther south, but perhaps not?

The following inns in Ogunquit all have good reputations and locations on or near the Marginal Way with views of the water. The Anchorage is the biggest (about 200 rooms) and has most updated amenities and Sparhawk is somewhat smaller (about 100 rooms) and has a more "quaint" feel - both are low rise type motels. The Beachmere has about 50 rooms in a nice old Victorian. The Terrace by the Sea has is another low rise motel -probably 20 rooms - very close to the beach. If you are looking for a more "upscale" inn on the water suggest you check out the Stage Neck Inn in York.
Every place in the area should be quiet then - unless of course you will be there over Memorial Day Weekend- when all hotels should be full.

Well, really not sure what your looking for, but again I'd look at the Sparhawk, and stay in the rooms directly on the seawall. From your lanai, the ocean is directly below depending on the tides. Fall asleep to the sound of the surf beside you. If you are staying for more than a couple of nights, there are some condo's on Moody Beach that may work. Smaller newengland style structure, with maybe 8 units. I'll see if I can find the name, but stand by my original recommendation.

If you want to be in a walk to everything location, with great views as well, stay at the Anchorage. If you want a more secluded location, I'd stay at the Cliff House. Another place that is nice, but is north of Ogunquit and south of Portland, is the Black Point Inn.(www.blackpointinn.com)
They have an oudoor and indoor pool, and great views as well. It is also more secluded(can't walk to anything).

What you're looking for can be found in Kennebunkport, just a bit further north. (Still close enough for a day trip to Ogunquit or Portland.) Check out the White Barn Inn or the Captain Jeffers, Schooners, or Arundel Inn.
To really get away from it all, check out the Black Point Inn in Scarborough.

Poss,
I followed your posts a while ago on the Canada board and used many of your recommendations. We love the Ogunquit area for many reasons but I do not think you will find the type of accomodations you are want/are used to. One possibilty is the Hartwell House. We have not stayed there but I think it is slightly more upscale than some of the others. Sparhawk is also good but more motel like than I sense you are after. The recommendation to try Kennebunkport and the White Barn Inn is a good one. I say this only after reading your great posts on your trip to the Canadian Rockies and having a sense of what you might like.
We love Ogunquit in the summer because of the fabulous beach and the Marginal Way but there are, unfortunately, not too many higher end accomodations. I don't think you would like Beachmere or Anchorage--both have great ocean front views but are not equivalent to the places you talked about in the Rockies.
White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport or the Black Point Inn or possibly Hartwell House in Ogunquit might be more what you're looking for.
PS--On our trip to the Rockies in September your trip reports became our "bible"!! Thanks for all the great info.
And if you do go to Ogunquit please try 98 Provence for dinner---a tried and true fabulous dinner.

Thanks for all the good in-put, everyone.
And MaggieOB!: lovely to hear those complimentary words and to learn that you had your own good trip to the Rockies (I checked your post). Thanks so much for replying in specific, personal detail. In fact, White Barn was the first place I looked at for Kennebunkport. But lowest rate for a king bed room at end of May/early June is close to $700 (maybe just over $600, I can't remember-- either one seems exhorbitant). Do you know Kennebunkport well enough to compare and contrast three of the other well-known inns, viz. Capts Jefferds, Fairfield, and Lord? We'll probably try to book one of those. Looking for good privacy and quiet (more like an inn than a B&B in other words) and fine accommodations, good breakfast, handsome surroundings, etc. I'd also be curious to know how those three compare to Blackpoint Inn. (I may try to post this question separately.)
Thanks again all--- and I hope everyone had a good holiday weekend.

Hi poss. My husband and I were in the area for our honeymoon Oct '01 (traveled the East Coast from Maryland to New York instead of Italy -- after the Twin Towers were attacked --and absolutely loved Maine! Very close to Ogonquit, we stayed in Kennebunkport at the Yachtsman's Inn or Lodge. They were the most comfortable beds I have ever had in a hotel! They had a down comforter and feather bed. Bose stereo system, even piped into the bathroom for a luxurious bath. It is a very small inn, and private. The rooms have a sliding glass door right out to a grassy area and water. You can feed the ducks right from the patio. Very clean and nice. Breakfast is included, and you can eat in the breakfast room with a view of the water, or right outside, depending on the weather.
The best restaurant we've ever been to is also within walking distance. It is Mabel's Lobster Claw. We were there on their last night before closing for the cold season, which was late October. Best lobster thermador (sp?)!! A fave place of the Bush clan, as well, who have summer residence in Kennebunkport.

We like the Marginal Way House particularly room 12 in the Main House. (Ocean view) I wouldn't call it "fine lodging" though it's fine with me;-)
Across the road is Terrace-by-the-Sea. They also have 4 ocean front rooms in the main house.
Don't miss the Front Porch's piano bar for some evening entertainment (show tunes).
