Monterey for a day - hotel suggestions near Cannery Row

Hi all,

We will be in Monterey in mid-Nov and will very likely spend only a day there. We were thinking as we won't have much time here, putting up around Cannery Row for a night would be the best solution. Can anyone suggest a nice place to stay around there? We are a family of 3 - 2 adults and a 6-year old kid; don't really want to pay beyond $200, if possible.

Tripadvisor puts the Monterey Plaza as no. 1 but I'm usually skeptical and would prefer forums like these. Has anyone stayed there? Also, to add, we're more into boutique hotels rather than big name chains.

We'll definitely be doing the 17-mile drive - the last time I've been to gawk at the Lone Cypress must be 10 years ago . Appreciate any comments and help!

The Monterey Plaza is indeed a wonderful place to stay. IMO it is the best hotel on Cannery Row.

I like the Monterey Plaza. Good location and very large rooms with two Queen or King beds.
(Am not sure about the size of the beds). Works quite well for a family due to the sizes of the rooms. Have not stayed at the new Intercontinental.

I recently started a thread on the Lounge asking about those TA rankings. I learned that being #1 only means that it is the most rated hotel in the area - not the nicest, not the one that the most people were satisfied with, etc. Just the one with the most reviews.

Haven't stayed at Monterey Plaza but really did like The Clement Intercontinental when we were there in May. The location was great - right on the water with lots of access to views if you didn't have a water view room, and it was right next to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and that wonderful walking/biking trail that goes along the bay. The beds were comfortable and the restaurant had fantastic breakfasts with VIEWS! You can get a good deal on rooms there but not on a weekend. Easy walk to other places to eat, too. Only downside is the parking charge. You could avoid this if you unload and then find your own parking and then walk back to the hotel.

Thanks all for your replies and help! I'm glad to see the Monterey Plaza is well regarded by both montereybob and mjs. Will consider the Clement Intercontinental as well, but the prices look higher than that of the Monterey Plaza (with their early bird discount)

We were also thinking about the Best Western (not on the water though) to save costs. Has anyone stayed there before?

That's interesting november_moon - will look out for your thread. I use TA as a start but really prefer forums such as this for more insight!
