Carmel? Pac Grove? Change of plans - so now what? Help needed and appreciated.

Hi All,
SLight change of plans. Husband is golfing Cypress Point and now we are going with another couple as a result. Couple likes to/used to staying 4 star. We had booked Mission Ranch (Eastwood's), but now, they have no other rooms for our friends - the other couple. Now, since hubby and I won't be kayaking, biking, walking and wine-ing on our own in the area, I need to get two rooms for two couples in a nice place that:
1. we can afford
and
2. they will like
and
3. parking - getting in/out of, walking, sightseeing,etc won't be a problem.

Right now, I have Gatehouse Inn in Pac Grove reserved for the 4 of us. Looks super nice, but if the guys are golfing 2 days and the girls are walking/shopping 2 days - then shouldn't we stay somewhere easier to access (for walking around, etc in carmel). we love quaint, not noisy and super-tourisy. had original plans for deetjens - but now with golf - this is out too. boo hoo....
please help! budget per night is $150 and up (or better) for us and up to $400 p/nt for them - but remember - we all have to stay in the same place. and - they have high expectations. wiling to go to 165 if we have to.

thanks!

OK - I have what seems to be a logical question (at least to me). WHY do you have to stay at the same place? I would go ahead stay at the Mission Ranch and let them find a place more suited to their budget. Presumably one of the couples will have a car - you/they can pick the other couple for outings/golf . . . . .

we think it is rude not to stay at the same place - that is why. we invited them to go with us now since my husband needed a 4th for golf - and they are CLIENTS.

That's an entirely different situation than your first message seemed to describe. You made it sound like they were tagging along and now you were being forced to change your plans.

Since they are clients and you invited them along you are stuck. Just stay at the Gatehouse. it is certainly a nice place.

Both places are just great. But Carmel is more crowded. Many folks actually prefer to stay in PG because it is less crowded and yet you have easy access to Carmel/Carmel Valley/Pebble Beach/Monterey. You would have to drive over to Carmel and parking there is not always easy, but PG is lovely - views to die for.

Hello Zacky - My husband and I stayed at the Wyndham Carmel Valley Ranch Resort 3 weeks ago. It is 12 miles or a 1/2 hour to The Lodge at Pebble Beach. I believe Cypress Point is within that 17-mile drive at Pebble Beach.

The Carmel Valley Ranch is lovely. We were able to get a price of $199 per night plus a $20 resort fee. We would most definately choose to stay there again.

We drove to "check-out" the Mission Ranch and the place looked like a dump. Clint's Hogs Breath Pub in Carmel by the Sea was a nice spot. We didn't see Clint at either place.

good-luck.

We live In Pacific Grove. The MISSION RANCH is NOT a dump. It is beautiful. They do about 200 weddings there per year with the receptions so it must be okay. It is a historic property. If you were planning to stay there, do so.

The other thing that the poster was wrong about is Hog's Breath Inn. Clint has not owned that place for many years. The poster was incorrect about the Mission Ranch and the Hog's Breath. He probably did not go to the Mission Ranch at all.

THE GREEN GABLE INN in PG would be good to stay for both of you. Beautiful old Victorian B and B on Monterey Bay.

Hi traveldawg,
We may also be in the area in September, however with our limited budget, I'm looking at the Holiday Inn Express on Wave Street in Pacific Grove.

Can you tell me about the location, is it truly as close to the beach as they say, as some rooms are supposed to have views. Any info appreciated greatly.

My husband and I drove to the Mission Ranch because we heard it was nice and that it belongs to Clint Eastwood. We are from the East Coast and were spending our honeymoon in both Carmel and Sonoma. The Ranch was a tremendous disappointment and if we were to have made lodging reservations there, we would have immediately canceled them upon arrival no matter what the penalty. It looks like an old camp with old buildings - nothing at all charming. The locals had also told us that at one time it was much better but has not been kept up in a long time. As far as Hog's Breath, we were told that if not now, it previously may have been owned by Mr. Eastwood. It doesn't matter who owns it, the place was a good spot to stop as you are meandering through the lovely town of Carmel by the Sea. We had a wonderful dinner at Casa Nova in Carmel by the Sea. The place is romantic, charming and has weathered the years very well. Good luck in your search.
