On a recent cross country trip, I really enjoyed watching the local TV news and reading small town newspapapers. What an interesting way to find out about the community.
You can tell alot about the culture of the community by observing the personality of the anchor people on the local TV news. In New York and Washington, the anchor people have an EDGE about them and the stories are usually harsh about negative things. In smaller markets, the TV people are folksy and the stories are more likely to be about the county fair, charity in the community, churchs, schools and local festivals.
I also really enjoy reading the small town newspapers. The best ones tell us about how much good is still out there in the communities.

We turned on the local tv in Italy to try to get a weather forcast-wow, was that a trip. There were two anchors-one older distinguished looking gentleman and one very voluptuous seductively dressed woman, complete with cleavage reading the newspaper outloud. I'm not joking, they were reading La Republicca to the audience. If that doesn't say it all!

Either that, or a single family controls the town and the press and therefore chokes off all dissent except for pablum that passes as news. Small towns are not nirvanas or oases of happiness. They are communities just like New York or Washington, just on a much smaller scale of pettiness, intrigue, and corruption.

I Wish our three local TV stations had more local news (Fargo ND). Unfortunetly they air too many national news feeds because they don't have to get out of the office to find and video local news. These "local" anchors are from all over the US. Some of them don't have a clue how to pronounce the name of a local town or know where it is. They try to sound "folksy" but they are from larger cities in other parts of the country. My cousin is a well known ancor in Phoenix. He doesn't use his real name and he is not from anywhere near Arizona.

Good point Jor. When we watch the "Local" news in southwest michigan, it's 80% national with one or two local stories. Apparently they don't want to send reporters out of Grand Rapids or South Bend.

My husband is a news junkie, so we typically watch local news just about anywhere we go.
However, we don't live in the US, yet we get our ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox news channels from US cities. So, it's almost as if we actually live in NYC, Nashville - TN, and Erie - PA every single day just by watching those networks and their local news. It's even odder when we go to those cities and see the same news anchors that we watch at home.

I usually watch the local news when I am away from home - turn it on while I am getting ready in the morning or whatever. I usually end up watching more news (and TV in general) when I am on business trips than vacation trips though.
