After a 14 day cruise from Santiago, around the cape and 2 stops in Uruguay, our Honeymoon trip spends only 1 1/2 days in Buenos Aires before heading out to Iguazu and Mendoza. We are both in our 40's. Any suggestions on the "must see / must do" list with that 1 day? That 1 day is actually Sunday Dec. 7th. We are staying in the Recoleta area. We thought about just walking around and down to Av. Corrientes and over to Av. 9 De Julio. Just to soak it in and search for great art, archetecture and museums. Also, I've been reading about the antique fair in San Telmo and thinking about a taxi down there. But just 1 day. Help?

I would suggest having breakfast at "La Biela" and walking around the Recoleta area in the morning.

Then, I would take a cab to San Telmo, for lunch and the fair.

The cabs which are allowed to wait outside the Alvear Palace Hotel, on the corner of Ayacucho and Avenida Alvear are supposed to be safe, or you can ask the porter to hail one for you. In exchange for a small tip, he should write down the cab's data for you. Be sure to have small bills (no larger than 20s) in pesos.

No offense to avrooster, but skip the San Telmo fair. I've been twice and it's a lot of junky stuff being sold. Plus it's really crowded and hard to walk through sometimes. Just my two cents. I think walking a lot to just explore the city is a good idea...it's a big city but if you are active and good walkers then you'll be fine.

Well here's my 2 cents worth. San Telmo on Sunday is wonderful, yes it's a big flea market atomostphere but we thought it was a lot of fun. There are muscians,dancers,and lots of home made crafts. It's quite entertaining. Plus if you don't like it you can leave. Also we enjoyed Avenida de Mayo, we enjoyed walking on that street with it's beautiful archetecture and that's were the Casa Rosada is. In Recoleta there is the cemetary that has a tour that can be interesting. Also La Boca, it's touristy but a cute little town with shops, resturants, artists.
We love everything about BA and just walked aimlessly but we were there for a month and had the time to do it. I think if you just wandered in Recoteta you won't be dissapointed.

No offense meant, or taken, but, just this once, I happen to agree with BOTH of the above posters! LOL!!

San Telmo is EXTREMELY touristy and there IS a "lot of junky stuff being sold". However, no one says you have to buy any of it.

I also absolutely agree with Gartin's: "it was a lot of fun....Plus if you don't like it you can leave."

What a shame that you are only spending one day in BA. If I were you I would revisted my itinerary and spend a fewer days in Mendoza. Otherwise you are really missing out on appreaciating a world class city.
