Buenos Aires: San Telmo

I have read in Fodor's Guidebook that the San Telmo Sunday Market is a "must see". Since the only Sunday we are in BA is the day we fly in at 14:35, would it be worth our while to race to get there at 5:00 or is that too late to be of any value?

Things are not quite over but are winding down at 5. I'd say, if your hotel is relatively close (anywhere downtown) its still worth checking out, but if you are travelling across the city, after a long trip, probably not worth it.

Even if you do not make it to the Sunday market, the square where it is held is surrounded by many great antique shops that are open during the week. There were some great bargains, we just were frustrated at trying to find a reliable shipping agent. The friends that we stayed with (native BA) said that with the great amount of poverty and the currency devaluation many items never make it out of the shipping office. We made do with things that we could carry back with us, but left behind some great paintings & silver.

We just returned from Buenos Aires and visited the Sunday market twice. I would say that you could go for a walk and a drink and then if you like what you see, come back with more time. There is tango in the center square about that hour even if the stalls are breaking down. The market is more a french flea market and the items we saw were basically European 'kitch' so it truly depends on what you want in the world of 'antiques'. Being there was a great atmosphere.

Heleni, I live in San Telmo and I can assure you that Plaza Dorrego Sunday Market is a " must see". I think it would be worth trying to get there specially if it will be your only Sunday in BA. If you arrive later than 5 or 6 pm you will also enjoy the place, you can walk and drink a beer in one of the many pubs that are around Plaza Dorrego. Don`t miss San Telmo and enjoy it!!!
