Where to stay in Croatia?
What part of Dubrovnik should we stay in? We will only be there for a few days and then traveling to the Dalmatian Islands. We would like a safe area in Dubrovnik that we could walk to a lot of places.

We stayed in Dubrovnik for 7 nights in march of this year. I considered staying in the Old Town versus staying above it (for the view) and elected to go with the view and am very happy I did.
I highly recommend the apartment we stayed in - beautiful view of Dubrovnik and an easy walk down to the Old City. There is a grocery store about 100 metres from the apartment and a bus stop if you prefer to take the bus back up the hill (although it's not a bad walk at all - maybe 20 minutes)

It's owned by a lovely family that is onsite - they will also make arrangements to pick you up at the airport. Tomas (the son) speaks perfect English and there is free wi-fi.
Here is a link to time lapse videos I did of the sunrise and sunset from our balcony (Apartment A2)

Would agree with the advice to stay just outside the Old Town, near the Ploce Gate.
We stayed five nights recently, with a balcony view looking on to the harbour; we were just across the road from the Excelsior Hotel.
Banje beach was a few hundred metres down the road and the Konzum shop near the Ploce Gate had a reasonable range of goods.
The drawbacks of the Old Town would seem to us were the steep inclines up from the main street and a slightly claustraphobic feel to the narrow alleyways.

In 2009 I stayed near the Pile Gate - an area with no steps into the old town of Dubrovnik, flat, very easy walk. I stayed at Edi's Sea View Rooms, which is super close to the Hilton Imperial Hotel. (You can book Edi's via Hostelbookers.com .) I stayed in a private room with private bathroom there; it's not really a "hostel" - more of a big house with private rooms.
My room was not amazing - a bit run down but still comfortable and clean. Modern AC unit that worked great. I liked the location near Pile (easy walk to old town, grocery store close by, bakery close by, big bus stop nearby). You can also walk from Edi's place down to a beach/cove and swim in the ocean - I went swimming with Edi himself one afternoon. (Edi is a nice guy, speaks perfect English, will answer any questions you have about the area.)
I will say the "sea view" was not a big draw, the view of the cove below is nice but doesn't exactly scream "Dubrovnik." (And not all of his rooms have "sea views" - so you have to ask for one.)
There are a lot of places to rent down near the Pile Gate - I'd certainly stay in this location again. I would stay at Edi's again too, but I felt I was paying a premium for the location, for a place that was comfortable and clean but not all that nice. You could probably pay more for a nicer place nearby - or one without a view that's not that amazing. I'm guessing all of the places near Pile are expensive in August.

We stayed outside the Old town in Ploce area just month ago. We had great time and would recommend to everyone. I believe that every place have their good and bad sides, but I found that just above city in apt. Tara is perfect if you prefer peaceful evenings, close to town and beach and best view in town if you like to enjoy in coffee on terrace while looking at see. hope to help..
