looks like we'll be in munich during mid to late february. i am a bit concerned about the potential for cold weather, and so am trying to develop a good plan of best things to do / see, how to get about etc., and still stay somewhat warm.

would very much appreciate any suggestions you may offer...jfm.

I can't give you much advice other than my own experience. We went to Munich as a daytrip from Austria in March of this year. I hate to say this (don't want to discourage you) but it was beyond freezing. Maybe it was a fluke thing, as I'm not sure how the weather usually is that time of year, but it was really cold and blustery. There were snow flurries flying around but mostly it was the wind chill. We had our video camera and my husband couldn't even get any video footage because it was too cold to take his hand out of his glove to properly work the camera. We planned on walking around Marienplatz but ended up ducking into any (and almost every!) shop we could find just to keep warm. We ended up cutting our "daytrip" short and leaving early. So my suggestion would be, depending on the weather, to plan mostly indoor activities that involve little walking, unless you are prepared for that kind of weather. Although we didn't do any of them, from what I understand there are plenty of museums, etc. to visit.

I live in St. Louis, which can get very cold so I am somewhat used to the weather, but it didn't make much difference. Still, Munich looked like a wonderful place and we are adding it to our Germany, Switzerland and France vacation in May.

Yes it will be bloody cold! Embrace it. Get some warm socks, maybe two, a good hat, a good coat, a coupla scarves and alternate drinking hot wine & coffee and warm pastries every hour on the hour!

I would make sure and do Museums/Galleries (there are plenty of them) in the early monrning and evening hours and then maybe confine "outdoor time"(strolling, shoping, etc) to the afternoon hours.

It's so fun to snuggle up and stroll from one cafe/bar/store to another, ducking inside every 15-20 minutes to warm up with a nice schnapps.

Don't miss the Deutches Museum. You can easily spend a whole day in there. The Residenzmuseum is also a good indoor activity and perhaps there are some good ballets/opera going on during that time.

Do you have time for any day trips? Munich is close to many great places and the train is soooo romantic when the land is covered with snow.

We we're in Munich mid March of this year, and enjoyed temperatures in the low 20s (Celsius) for most of our week long visit (so you could get as lucky as we were and have very mild weather). Getting around is very easy, the Metro is extensive and efficient (not surprisingly) and Munich is a very walkable city. In terms of sites, if you enjoy museums, I would highly recommend a visit to the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek as well as the Pinakothek der Moderne (all of which are concentrated in the same area). A visit to a beer hall also has it?s merits (Augustiner Keller near the Hauptbahnhof would be a good choice)
