What to do in Scotland
I am planning my first trip to Scotland. Will be taking the train from London & plan to stay in Glasgow & Edinburgh but have no idea how long to stay in each place, what there is to see in each place (I'm not a museum person), if there are any "must see" sites outside the 2 cities AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, where the safest areas for a single female to stay in each city? Thanks!

You apparently want us to plan your entire trip for you! What made you decide to go to Scotland if you don't have any idea if there is even anything there you want to see? It might be a good idea to do a little reading in a guidebook to get you started. You can always ask for more information on things. Fodorites are more than happy to help but appreciate someone doing at least a little research to get started!

In Edinburgh try to stay in the university lodging on the Royal Mile, next to the castle. I've stayed in Edinburgh solo (stayed at a B&B I got at the tourist bureau at the train station) and felt quite safe.
Walk walk walk, all around Edinburgh, around town, along Princes Street, and up to Arthur's Seat. Enjoy the architecture, the people, tea at the cafes, the great cabbies, and generally soak up the atmosphere. Take the nighttime walking tour, I think it has a Jeckel and Hyde theme. Buy a cardigan sweater.
I prefer Edinburgh to Glasgow myself, though Glasgow is dynamic, hectic, full of Georgian architecture and great for shopping, so personally I spend more time in Edinburgh.

OK, WHY are you going to Scotland? There are hundreds of things to see/do, and literally hundreds of "must sees", but w/ only a few days you can't see/do more than a few of them. So why did you decide on Scotland? Then we might be able to help.

Am going there because I'm on a quest to see as many countries as I can!!! I was just hoping to get some ideas of things to see/do from those that have been there as I am open to most anything (excluding golf as one mentioned!!). I have done some homework already but I much rather get "first hand knowledge" from others rather than planning everything from a travel book. Thanks to those that offered ideas & keep 'em coming!!

So go to one of Edinburgh or Glasgow, stay one night and leave. No need to sightsee.
Sorry, there are just too many possibilities for us to guess your interests. Do a little research to narrow things down and then ask for personal experiences.

mom2mali: There are many Scotland "experts" on here including serveral who live there. BUT - we need to know <b>SOMETHING</b> to help you in any usefull way. You say you have already done some research - OK what looks interesting? What specifically do you have questions about? All we know so far is you've done some reading and don't like golf.
And we also need to know when the trip will be - this make a big difference - especially for Edinburgh.

mom2mali, I think you'll be getting the vibes that we need a wee bit more about you before we can help. Most important, how long do you have, and what things interest you? You've said you want to experience different cultures, but even with a population of just 5 million there is no single "Scottish" culture.
My first choice will always be the far north west coast, though I have lots of good friends who would see that as the holiday from hell.
