Travel from Rome to Praiano
Hello -
My wife, 2 teenage children, and I visiting Italy for the first time. We're flying into Rome on Saturday July 9 and need to get to Praiano. I understand there are trains from the airport to Termini Station, and trains from there to Naples. Once in Naples, what is the best way to get to Praiano? I believe there are trains to Sorrento and then a bus to Praiano, as well as buses that go to Praiano. Which would be better? Also, is the extra money for the ES trains from Rome to Naples worth the cost? How about the extra cost for seat reservations? Thanks so much in advance for any advice you can share.

The best and easiest way to get from Naples to Priano is by a private driver. I don't have the web site handy that I used (it is bookmarked at home), but the guy's name was Genaro. He came highly recommended on this site and he was outstanding. Very reasonably priced. I'll look for the web site when I get home if you'd like.

Hi ap,
If you take a D train (not necessarily air conditioned) you will save about 30E for the 4 of you compared to the ES*.
However, you can purchase special fare tickets for Saturdays for only 15E for the adults.
The price of the ES* includes the reserved seat.
Trains from FCO to Roma TE leave on the :07 and :37. Fare is 9.5E.
Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento and SITA bus to Praiano will be about 10E pp.
Limo from Naples Centrale to Praiano is about 90E each way.
Where are you staying in Praiano?

Let me say that we took the train to Rome from Naples.
We were glad there was a special fare on the Intercity train which at the time cost my husband and I 10 E each. When there is one of these special fares, it is very crowded. It will undoubtedly be crowded on a Saturday in July.
We even had seat assignments.
I would not hesitate to take the train again, but I would spring for the ES. The intercity train was very crowded, we had a very difficult time getting through the aisles to the compartment.
People were in our seats when we got there and we had a difficult time getting them out. The conductor and everyone else pretended not to know one bit of English. Even though the two girls that were in our car did not have tickets for that car and took up most of the luggage space so we had to hold our bags, he could have cared less.
Do not start your vacation this way after an all night flight. Take the train, but do it by Eurostar.

Hi,
We hired a car to pick us up at the Naples airport to take us to Praiano. It was expensive (I do not remember the cost), but we had no idea where we were going. Our hotel arranged this for us. When we left to go to Rome, we felt very comfortable taking the bus to Sorrento and the train to Naples and then another train to Rome. Please let us know where you are staying. Ira has his best pick of the town and I have another. Mine is the Tramonto D'Oro. Where ever you stay it will be a spectacular trip.

Hi,Iam trying to decide whether to stay in Positano,Praiano,or Sorrento.Friends stay in Positano and tell me its beauty is in its quaintness. I just read an interesting comment stating Sorrento is a better location for traveling around the area.I have a minimum of 6days in the area and could do eight days total in the area. Then I plan to do 5 days in Rome.In your opinion does this seem balanced, and where is best to stay. We love fantastic backdrops. Thanks in advance

Hi Ap,
We are headed to Praiano next week (staying at the Open Gate hotel). We have arranged for a driver to pick us up at the Naples train station. His name is Marcello and came highly recommended. His website (seesorrento.com) will give you some info on him. From our exchanges thus far, he seems to be wonderful. He will be stopping in Pompeii for us on our return to Napoli Centrale.
For us a driver was necessary b/c we have 5 adults and 2 kids. It seems the best way to go in any case. Good Luck!
