Train or Plane from R0me to Naples
Being an Aussie and not knowing where Rome airport and train stations are situated, we are seeking the help from our expert Fedorites.
We will be arriving in Rome with Cathay Pacific from Sydney at 7.30am and need to get to Naples to join a tour in the afternoon.
1- Is there a railway station at Rome airport to Naples or do we need to go into Rome itself?
2- How often do trains go and how long is the trip. Is there an express train?
3- How much does it cost and how do we organize tickets. Do we need to book these ahead of time.
This is not happening until May next year but if we fly to Naples, we need to book now as seats are limited as we are using Frequent Flyer points and still may not get the connection in time.
If the train option is easy - this may be the way to go.
Anxiously awaiting you replies.

I can't answer to the specifics of your questions, but we did take a fast train from Rome to Naples which I think took apx. 1 hour. It was a very easy ride.
Look on trenitalia.com or raileurope.com- those sites have the schedules and the fees.
I think that Rome and Naples are fairly close and the train may be your best option.

Curlie - From FCO you will have to change at Roma Termini.
FCO- Roma Termini takes 30 mins.
Roma Termini-Naples takes about 1hr 45' by ES (Eurostar).
(The new AV train is about 15 mins quicker)
With connection time at Roma Termini you can figure FCO-Naples by ES takes +/- 3 hrs.
(Less by AV)
There are frequent departures. For details see:
www.trenitalia.com
Fare: FCO-Napoli Centrale is approx:
€32.00 2nd cl (€42.50 1st cl) by ES
€42.50 2nd cl (€48.50 1st cl) by AV
48.50
For all info
www.trenitalia.com
Hope this helps ...

Hi C,
>We will be arriving in Rome with ...and need to get to Naples to join a tour in the afternoon.<
Ahh, nothing like leisurely travel.
Schedules for the shuttle from Aeroporto Fiumicino to Rome TE, as well as for Rome to Naples are at www.trenitalia.com.
Unless you are arriving on a weekend or holiday, I suggest that you buy your tickets to Naples when you buy your tickets to Rome at the FCO train station.
See www.alitalia.it for flights between Roma and Naples - about 92E pp.

Adding on to this question. We will also be taking the train from Rome to Naples. I sort of would like to play it by ear and not purchase our tickets in advance.
There are so many different fare choices on the Trenitalia site. What is the price difference for buying the fare 60 days out at the sale rate (and which fare would be the right selection) or if we waited and bought them once we were in Rome. Are we just talking a few E?
