Study in Italy v. UK

I'm planning a major move from Boston to either the UK or Italy to spend a year studying/wondering around/etc.... can't seem to choose one; would appreciate suggestions and any available info. Thanks!

Just one person's view of course but this article
http://education.guardian.co.uk/egweekly/story/0,5500,806169,00.html

is very critical of Italian universities. Why not study in the UK and spend a week or two in Italy?

If this relates to your education, it would depend on the quality of the school, right? My goddaughter loves London, but she chose Bocconi University's in Milan for its excellent International Business program.

P.S. as a student she travels to London every chance she gets; for $80 RT from Milan, I would too.

I hope you mean wandering around.

This all very much depends on what you plan to study. Do you speak Italian?

In any case, studying at the university in Italy (except at the University for Foreigners in Perugia) is impossible for anyone that does not have an Italian "Diploma di scuola media superiore" or an equivalent. American studies are not considedered valid, afaik, just like Itlaian studies are not valid in the Us (an Italian must always have an American degree to teach or work as a doctor or such things in the Us). As for Italian universities, just like in any other part of the world there are very good ones and awful ones. I have chosen Statale in Milano and I have been sorry ever since (and I have dropped out!), now I would chose (if I wanted to go back to studying languages, and in particular American English and American Literature) Sapienza in Rome. Foreigners' univesity in Perugia (http://www.unistrapg.it/) offers classes of Italian language and culture for foreigners, and it is actually known as a very good one.
