Avoiding to be ripped off by Rome taxi drivers

Hi, which is the best way to travel from Rome's airport, Fiumicino to the Spainsih Steps? I was thinking of taking the train from the airport to the Termini station and from there walk to my hotel near the Spainish Steps. Or should I be consider just taking the cab from the aiport, anyone know how much will this cost?
Also how much is the normal taxi fare from Termini train station to the Spainish Steps?
Thanks

Hello Peko,

From Termini station you can take the METRO LINE A to Spagna (Piazza di Spagna/Spanish Steps). Alternatively a taxi should cost you no more than about EURO 10.00. (Otherwise it's a 20-30 min. walk).

For limo service details from Fiumicino have a look at:
www.limoservicerome.com
www.airportshutt le.it

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Peko:

It is too far to walk. from Termini to the Spanish steps. If you have the usual amount of luggage (not just a small suitcase), the Metro also is inconvenient (long coridors, no escalators on several lower levels.

I recommend taking a taxi. I did this in october and paid 7 %euro, a large suitcase included.

Just make sure to take an official taxi in front of Termini station: Go out by the main exit and continue straight ahead to the white awning, where the official line starts. Make sure the driver switches on his meter.

I have never been cheated by a Rome taxi driver from an official stand or from my hotel.

Enjoy your trip.

Phil.

I haven't been cheated by Rome taxi drivers either. You can also arrange, for not much more money, to have a car and driver meet you at the airport.
I had a good experience with
Euroservice, email is [email protected]
but there are several good ones.

A few more advices on taxis in Italy. Always make sure your taxi is an official one. Stand in th line at any taxi stand or have your hotel calla taxi for you. Do not accept rides fom people brushing by and saying "free taxis, taxi libero": they are irregular drivers and will rip you off (the often charge twice the average amount of money needed). Official taxis must have and always use a meter, they are white (sometimes yellow and sometimes sport large commercial images on the sides) and have a sigh saying "taxi" on the roof. Inside the car there is a metal plaque with a number. Memorize that number and, in case you feel that something has gone wrong call the Vigili urbani (Italian traffic police) or have them called by the hotel personnel BEFORE you pay the sum requested by the driver. If there is anythng unclear, the taxi driver might run off, but if you have memorized the number in the metal plaque, the police will be able to track him down. In any case, usually nothing too bad happens if you use only the above described taxis.
