I would think twice. Many nice restaurants and shops would be closed. I know you said you wanted scenery but part of a memorable trip is enjoying good food and being able to browse the environs and just take in the ambience. We just came back last month and thought it was perfect timing to avoid the Summer crowds but even then the tail end of the trip brought gale force winds and clouds which made walking around less enjoyable.

Dear Sue:

Before you make up your mind, take a look at the hotel and restaurant listings on the Fodors site for Amalfi. Notice how the large majority of them are closed from Oct/Nov – March. For example, two perennial restaurants favorites with Fodorites on this page, Cumpa Cosimo and Chez Black, are closed all winter. Same with most of the hotels. Capri will be basically shut down with very few if any ferries running and probably no hotels at all will be open. The point above about part of the charm of Amalfi being the food and sitting in cafes, etc is spot on. You really want to save Amalfi for the time it is at its best. I try to liken Amalfi in the winter to Cape Cod: its just as pretty, but its certainly not the same as getting an ice cream cone in Hyannis Port on a hot July day....Save Amalfi for the good weather. Rome is great in the winter and so is Florence. If you want scenery, go north to the Italian Alps.
Hello Dee,

Anytime is good for the Amalfi Coast IMO. The highlight is the scenery, and low season is an easy time to travel there.

It's true that many hotels/restaurants may be closed in places like Positano, - but what's to stop you staying in Sorrento, which is livelier in winter?
Or Amalfi, Naples or Salerno?

I'd go tomorrow!

Steve

anyone know how I can find out when the ferries to/from Capri do start operating in 2003? I'll be staying in POsitano beginning March 30 and would like to travel from there to Capri on April 2. Will this be possible? I need the type of transportation that will allow me to take luggage as I will be staying overnight in Capri.

I don't think Positano-Capri services run as early as March, but the place to check for up-to-date information is:
www.capri.net/home/en/transport.php

Your best option if there is no direct service is to take the ferry/hydrofoil from SORRENTO.

Timetables again are on the above website.

You can reach Sorrento by bus from Positano.

Hope this helps ...

Steve
