I am able to find the train that takes you into Orvieto. No problem.
I was able to find the bus schedule that takes you from Orvieto into Bagnoregio, but cannot read it accurately (b/c I don't know Italian): http://www.cotralspa.it/PDF_Orari_Comune/Orvieto.pdf
(1) When is the latest bus that leaves Orvieto into Bagnoregio?
(2) I want to spend the night in Civite di Bagnoregio.

I know someone here can answer. We drove from Orvieto and it was very easy. I hope you are aware that there is a town called Bagnoreggio, and then there is Civita di Bagnoreggio - which is accessible only by foot. Do you have a backpack?

Rick Steves gives directions for reaching Civita di Bagnoreggio in the old guide (1998) I have. In the book it says a shuttle bus runs from the town of Bagnoreggio to the base of the bridge you walk to get to Civita. Maybe someone here know if that still runs.

We loved the tiny town when we visited in May years ago. Awesome views and lots of flowers blooming. Good for a few hours' visit.

By Bus To get to Civita, you will need first to get to Bagnoregio. There is a bus from Orvieto; the trip takes about an hour and costs €3.20 round trip. Blue Cortal buses leave Orvieto's Piazza Cahen, then stop at the train station, daily except Sunday at 6:15 and at 12:45, 3:45, and 6:20 p.m. During the school year from September to June, there are additional departures at 7:20 and 7:50 a.m. and at 1:55 p.m. Buy tickets at the train station bar.

By bus from Bagnoregio to Orvieto. As mentioned earlier, it's €3.20 roundtrip from Bagnoregio to Orvieto or vice versa. From Bagnoregio, there are 6 departures a day for a 1 hour bus ride. Departures daily except Sunday at 5:30, 9:55, 10:10, 1:00, 2:25, & 5:25. During the September to June school year there are also departures at 6:35, 6:50, 1:35, & 4:40.

Thank you for replying....do you think Civite di Bagnoreggio is worthy of a whole day's visit? How many hours would you give it? I am thinking of staying for the whole day.

Civita is tiny and is at least a mile (maybe 2)from where the bus drops. There is a small city bus you can take the rest of the way or you can walk. I visited from Orvieto in September and I don't think the bus ran as late as 6:20. I'm sure the last return bus was earlier by at least an hour. FYI, if you ride during the morning or on the 1:35 bus, you will be surrounded by middle school and high school kids and the bus will make extra stops. Be sure to buy a roundtrip ticket if you are daytripping so you don't have to worry about trying to find somewhere open to buy your return ticket.

I'm not sure what you would do with an entire day in Civita. I think there are only 8-10 residents living there anymore.

We were there for about 2.5 hours and that was leisurely. If I had been by myself, I would have spent a bit longer doing some serious photography. Personally, I don't think it would be worth hauling any luggage up just to stay overnight there.

Civita di Bagnoreggio is worth maybe a lunch and an hour stroll. No way I'd spend the night there, let alone a day. It's positively teensy. And a real pain to drag luggage into.

Hi; Civita is lovely. You really don't need a day there. Agree with Dayle; There is a long steep walkway to get to the town. With luggage it's a haul. Stay the extra night in Orvieto. There are any number of other towns to visit from Orvieto. On our visit to Civita , we met two Americans that stay the summer. Very interesting people. Dick

Visited Civita 2 weeks ago (did not visit Bagnoreggio) and as other posters pointed out it is a tiny little village (Kybourbon...the population is now 10 as a 92 year old male passed away two weeks before we got there), with not a lot to do. Having said that, it is a great visit for a few hours, a unique experience walking up the long pedestrian bridge into the town center. We had an incredible lunch at Ristorante Antico Forno ("Franco" the owner is a friend of Rick Steeves and will entertain you with his stories and tell you about the town), we had wine in a cool little cave right in the town center and there are some Estrucan sites to see. A great visit, but not worth an entire day or night.

Thanks for this great info! Invaluable to have the bus schedule! Our trip is planned for May. We will spend 5 nights in Florence and arrive late morning / early afternoon in Orvieto on 5/17 and back to Pisa early am on 5/19 for our flight home.
On 5/18, we'd like to go to Civita. Would it be best to go in the morning and spend early afternoon in Civita and evening in Orvieto? Or would our time be best spent with morning in Civita and back for afternoon and evening in Orvieto? I saw a the post about lunch in Civita, we'd like to plan for that...realistically, it seems like these are our options...
1) 12:45 bus arrive in Civita by 2pm (including shuttle?), return on 5:25 bus
2) 7:50am bus arrive in Civita by 9:30am return on 1:35pm bus.
Your suggestions / alternations much welcome!

I would do 2. There is really not much to do in Civita. If you got bored, you could visit Bagnoregio until the return bus. Buy your return ticket when you buy your ticket to Civita so you don't have to track down somewhere to buy the return.

Since the main attraction of Civita di Bagnoreggio is the scenery, I'd plan to be there when all the shops and galleries are closed in Orvieto! So try to get theer for lunch, stroll and enjoy. Be back in Orvieto by 3pm. for the passagietta (SP?) Orvieto's is one of the very best.

FYI - The schedule you linked is through 3/28/2010. Page 1 is departing Orvieto (partenza da Orvieto) from Piazza Cahen (at the top where the funicular arrives). Page 3 is departing Orvieto from the train station (at the bottom of the funicular). Page 5 departing to Orvieto Piazza Cahen and Page 7 departing to Orvieto train station. Times shaded in blue are workdays (M-S), pink shading is for Sunday/holidays (no buses in pink). There will probably be some added buses for spring/summer.

Patricia, I don't know if it will make any difference to your travel schedule and plans but the Giro d'Italia is going to be in the area between Carrara to Montalcino on May 15th and on May 16th the route runs from Chianciano Terme to Monti Terminillo. I would guess the route being in that area is going to increase traffic just a bit We are looking forward to watching some of the race on the 16th. Deborah

There is a new bus excursion service that depart from Orvieto Scalo (Piazza della Pace, under the train station) to Bagnoregio.
Round drip € 15/person, with audioguide on board and informational brochure. It is a nice service and gives enough time to enjoy Civita. You arrive in Bagnoregio, then walk to Civita (there is also a local bus that takes you to the Belvedere view point of Civita).
Definitely a useful and fun day excursion! Only available on Saturdays and Sundays.
