Day trip Rome to Orvieto and Civita di Bagnaregio

Has anyone done a day trip from Rome to Orvieto and on to Civita di Bagnaregio by train and/or bus? How doable is it? Can you offer me any specific information re which train/ bus to catch?

Are there any tour companies that offer such a trip?

Very interested in any experiences or tips you may have to share. Thanks.

Hi L,

I think that Orvieto is worth a day by itself.

You could certainly do both, but it would make for a very long day. As Ira pointed out, Orvieto itself is worthy of a whole day. Civita is in the vicinity, but because of the twisty roads its still about an hour from Orvieto. A bus would drop you off at the town edge and its about a 20 minute walk to/from Civita from Bagnoregio, so it takes a couple of hours to see Civita, more if you plan on eating there.

Hi Lavender - If you decide to do both you'd need to plan it carefully around the Orvieto-C.Bagnoregio bus timetable (COTRAL) as services are infrequent.

If you want to spend the morning in C. Bagnoregio you'd need to:

- leave Roma Termini on the 07.14 train (R)
Arr. Orvieto 08.32.

- Catch the 09.10 Cotral bus from Orvieto F.S (- railway station).
Arr. C. di B: 10.00a.m

The most convenient return bus to Orvieto leaves C.di B at 13.00.
Arr. Orvieto: 13.50

Alternatively if you prefer to spend the morning in Orvieto you could catch one of two lunchtime buses from Orvieto:

- Dep 12.45 from Orvieto Piazza Cahan.
Arr. C. di B: 13.40

OR

- Dep. 13.55 from Orvieto Piazza Cahen.
Arr. C. di B: 15.05

N. B. The last bus back to Orvieto leaves C. di B at 17.25

The above times are currently valid Mon-Fri.

For weekend timetables see Cotral website.

For train timetables see:
www.trenitalia.com

For Cotral bus timetables see:

Hope this helps ...

Steve

julia, to bookmark a thread, right click on the title, and select "add to favorites" -- then put it in a folder of your choice.

All you did was "top" it, which is OK too.
