North or South Iceland?

I'll be in Iceland for 8 days, and only have around 4 days to travel outside of Reykjavik. I know I can't do much in that short amount of time. So which path would be more exciting?

1) Drive north from Reykjavik, spend some time around Snaefellsjokull, then go east, end up around Akureyri and use that as a jump-off point for the area around Myvatn.

2) Drive south and then east from Reykjavik, so I can do the areas around Hekla, Skaftafell National Park and Jokulsarlon.

I'll be doing the Golden Circle / Blue Lagoon at other times on my trip. So which route is a better use of 4 days? I really love what I see around Myvatn...that's what I'm leaning towards. Any help would be much appreciated!
