Lodging near Munich Airport
On an upcoming trip to Europe, we will be dropping a rental car off at the Munich airport and flying out the next morning. My original plan was to go back downtown to stay by the train station so that we could enjoy an evening there (we will have been in Munich for a couple nights at the beginning of the trip). I started thinking that it probably made more sense to just stay out by the airport. Does anyone have any lodging recommendations near the airport (under 90 E)? Is there anything to do there in the evening? How much is the train from the airport to the main station?
I guess I am trying to weigh the benefits of staying near the airport for ease of travel versus the enjoyment we could get from our last night by being in town.
Thank you.

Type "Munich airport hotel" (without quotes) into the search box at the top of the page. I just checked, and there are at least 50 posts which address this topic. Prepare to skim through the posts until you find something you like. I know that some people recommend Freising and Landshut. There may be other suitable small towns near the airport.
The Munich airport used to be good Priceline territory, so go to biddingfor travel.com and check it out.

Hi Tyler -
I would strongly recommend staying in Munich or in a town near the airport and not in some soulless Marriott at the airport.
Munich is of course wonderful, and if you spent your last night there, you might be able to see some things that you missed at the beginning of your trip.
The night before a flight home from Munich a few years ago, we stayed in Landshut. What a great town. About 20 minutes from the airport. Beautiful main street that broadens into a kind of square. Excellent castle - Burg Trausnitz to tour. Plenty of restaurants for dinner. Walk around at night and breathe in the wonderful Bavarian atmosphere. We stayed at the Goldene Sonne, which was very good-looking and comfortable well -located and I think in your price range - maybe a little bit higher but worth it.
The much smaller town of Freising is even closer to the airport - 10 minutes. On a different trip we had a 4-5 hour layover in the Munich airport and went to Friesing for lunch and a long walk. Very nice - small and quiet, but with an important cathedral. Don't know about hotels.
Please do not waste your last evening in Europe at an airport hotel.
Have a great trip!

Hi,
We stayed in Erding, Germany last year and highly recommend it.
It's about 15 to 20 minutes to the airport. We stayed at The Park Hotel (Best Western). It was just a few minutes walk to the very charming old town from the hotel. Also, the train station is just a block away.
We dropped the car at the airport the afternoon before our flight, took a cab to the hotel (20Euros) and then took a cab back to the airport the next morning (at 6am). I know it's not the most cost effective method, but it sure was very convenient and we had a very pleasant evening having dinner and walking around the old town.

The "soulless Marriott at the airport" is actually in Freising, which the same poster correctly describes as "small and quiet, but with an important cathedral". I've stayed there several times (using Priceline) and it is perfectly pleasant but very hard to find by car unless you have good instructions.
The subway from the main train station to the airport is about $10 and takes around an hour (13 stops).

Hi Tyler -
We drove, but I checked bahn.de for you. There's a train from Landshut to Freising, where you transfer to the airport bus. Takes 50 minutes. My recollection is that the airport buses leave right from the train station in Freising. Is that correct, someother?
I would also consider driving to Landshut, keeping your car for one more night, and dropping it off at the airport the next day. That's what we did a few years ago.

We dropped off our rental car at the airport and then walked over to the Kempinski Airport Hotel. We were leaving at 7:00am and just walked to the terminal. Very convenient; which is what we wanted. It was 119E with continental breakfast. They also have a restaurant and bar for dinner. The bar was cheaper to eat in.
We highly recommend this hotel. They have a web site where they have a fly in/out special for 1 night.

We have stayed in Freising the last couple of years prior to our departure from the Munich Airport.
We stayed at the Hotel zur Gred. We enjoyed both the hotel and the restaurant. We also have eaten in the the restaurant at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, which was quite good.

The Hotel zur Gred is about 5 minutes from the train station, where there is a dedicated airport shuttle (Bus #635). The Hotel Bayerisher Hof is an added 5 minutes.
The bus ride is about 20 minutes. The last couple of years opted for the taxi instead. It was about 15 minutes, 20 euros.
After a trip to more acclaimed tourist destinations, Freising makes a nice contrast at the end of the trip. It is laced with waterways. The church residence on the hill has both a nice chapel and an interesting museum of religious art. We especially liked the exhibit of manger scenes. Freising also has the oldest active brewery in the world.
Regards, Gary

We arrived in Germany before our relatives who were joining us, so we picked them up at Munich Airport. We stayed at Romantik Hotel Furstenhof in Landshut the night before they arrived, and I remember that it was quite nice and an easy drive to the airport.
I agree, don't stay in some "souless" airport hotel the last night!

pja mentioned Erding and I'd also suggest it. It's about 7 km from MUC. We stayed there at the Kastanienhof. Very nice family-owned hotel with large, comfortable rooms, some with balconies (even had AC). Great breakfast. Less than a block from the S-bahn station.
