Difficulty getting York accommodations for one night!

We are arriving in York, England, on a Saturday for a one-night stay. I am having the devil's own time getting a B&B for one night only.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'd be happy to stay outside York, but don't want to travel too far -- we will be driving up from London that day and want to spend Saturday afternoon, evening, and Sunday morning exploring the city.

Almost all B&Bs stipulate two-night stay at weekends, as it's difficult to fill odd vacant room for a Friday or a Sunday. You'll probably have to go for hotels, most of which accept overnight guests. Go to York Tourism and its booking service at http://www.york.roomcheck.co.uk/

I agree w/ Alec. York is a major destination and many if not most places will require a 2-nite stay on weekends. They will sometimes book last minute rooms if there is a cancellation of they are not full, but you can't count on finding one. There are several good hotels in York so you can probably find something in one of them.

Try Smooth Hound. com .
They list about 50 or more inexpensive hotels and b&b's in and around York.
However you may have a problem with the one night stay.
I made nearly all my reservations for my Sept/Oct GB trip through Smooth Hound, thanks to a tip by a Fodorite,
and had no problems.

Debe, on all my driving trips of Britain, I have never yet stayed in a city or large town, always in a nearby village, and yet I didn't miss an attraction in each city, that I wanted to see.
I reckon we got the best of both worlds, a "short" drive from the village into the city, then at the end of the day, we drove back to our beloved english village, to stay sometimes on farm B&B. Quite often we could walk to the village Inn for dinner & drinks & talk about all that we had seen, but more so, we could wake up to sounds of the english countryside, not traffic noise, etc,
There are plenty of B&B's just outside of York. We use Nationwide B&B service, try www.bedandbreakfastnationwide.com
then search their website for a B&B near York.
Another reason we enjoy staying outside of the cities, is that on the last day, when one has to move on, its more enjoyable driving out of the village, onto a M or A road, rather than traversing city traffic, then ring roads, etc, before you get onto the major motorway.
Food for thought, cheers Leigh

Thanks to everyone -- we were able to get accomodations at a B&B for one night (they had a cancellation) in York, so we're all set.

But I appreciate what Tropo is saying about being slightly outside -- especially with regard to being able to be on one's way with minimal difficulty.

I am happy to be in York, though -- would like to be able to walk around easily. And we're planning to attend Evensong at York Minster...

Cheers!

If you are intending to spend the afternoon in York, what time are you planning on leaving London ?? I'd allow at least 5 hours for the drive normally, and it may be even worse than usual since it's both a bank holiday weekend and the end of the English school holidays.
