Day trip from Munich - Amersee and Andechs Monastery

My husband and I will be in Munich for a few days in August as part of a larger trip. We are interested in visiting the Andech's Monastery and the Amersee and thought that the combo would make a nice day trip from Munich. Any tips and/or recommendations would be great.

The plan is to take the S-Bahn to Herrsching. How is the walk from there to the monastery? Is there bus service?

After visiting the monastery and having something to eat and drink at their beer garden, we thought we'd make our way to the Amersee and spend the rest of the day there - maybe rent bikes and ride along the lake and/or take a boat ride across the lake. Are there any good swiming beaches if the weather is warm?

I'd like a relatively relaxing day where we can hang out by the lake, drink some beer, eat some food, wander around, see some pretty scenery, then make our way back to Munich in the evening. How late does the S-Bahn serve the Herrsching station?

The trip as a whole is mainly a beer-themed trip, so any advice on must-visit beer gardens or halls is greatly appreciated.

Yes there is a bus, or you could take a taxi, or the walk is about 3km. Here is some info:

Thanks markan. 3km isn't a bad walk and the Wiki article mentions that the walk is pleasant. We might do that and consider it our exercise for the day

Earlier on the trip we are doing a brewery walk just outside of Bamberg in the Aufsess area - that is a 14 km loop that takes you to 4 different breweries along the way.

It will be like we really are beer pilgrims

That walk is uphill. If you're not completely drunk, it would be easier walking downhill to Herrsching station. You can swim in Herrsching or Stegen (and many other places). If it's too crowded there, the Wörthsee http://www.augustiner-am-woerthsee.de/ would by my first pick for swimming and eating. Rel. small and nice.

Yeah I read about your planned beer walk in the Frankische Schweiz. That should be fantastic. Amazing place that Upper Franconia. Where else in the world can you go for a 14km walk in the countryside and visit 4 small, privately owned breweries that in some cases are centuries old? I dare say it's the worlds greatest remaining beer paradise.

The Woerthsee looks really nice - we may have to check that out.

The more I read about Upper Franconia, the more I am excited to go. I think I could probably spend the entire trip there. Definitely beer paradise.

We were there three years ago. As I recall, we had a day ticket and took the S-bahn, then a bus. If I remember correctly, there were two different bus lines -- one on which your day ticket was good, and another, which did not accept the ticket and charged extra. They both stopped downhill from the monastery within a few minutes of each other. Can anyone verify if I am correct, and perhaps save November Moon a few euros? My memory is unfortunately hazy here. (Perhaps it was the monastery beer?) And we did enjoy strolling along the Ammersee; just wished we had had a little more time.
Enjoy your trip!

When you want to take the bus to the monastery, check the connections first as the bus #951 does not run often.
http://mvv-muenchen.de/en/home/index.html
use "Andechs, Kloster" as destination
Your MVV ticket is good also for those bus connections you get there.
You don't have to backtrack to Herrsching, by the way. Bus 951 connects Herrsching S-Bahn station with Starnberg S-Bahn station. Which makes a nice round trip.
