...to fly from NY to Ireland? Or have I just chosen the wrong time of year? I was looking at flights in late spring/early summer (late May and June). I was considering flying into Dublin and out of Shannon or visa versa due to limited vacation time. While I didn't think they would be free I thought they might be a little lower in general.

Hard to compare without your specific dates, but a quick search on kayak turned up return New York - Dublin for as low as $752 (mid-week travel dates) A search of NYC-Dublin, Shannon-NYC leaving on May 28th(Saturday) and returning June 12th (Sunday) came in as low as $825 So, yes $1,000 does seem high.

We're flying in May at less cost. Keep looking----every day. We watched every day, finally booked at $745 from Chicago---next day $900 and it hasn't changed since then.

In Sept.'10 we watched every day and for 2 days only about 2 months out
$645. It pays to keep looking.

The situation in Eqypt, and now Libya has driven oil prices higher.

Higher oil prices drive higher airfares.

With oil prices now over $116/bbl I would not expect airfares to decline any time soon.

I just checked, Swiss Air and Air Lingus from Boston or NYC around $850-$980.

I found one flight that is a little cheaper, just under $800. If I alter that in any way, day, time, into Shannon/out of Dublin (which I think I might prefer) the price jumps. Last year on a flight to Africa I found that waiting for the prices to drop was a mistake. The longer I waited the higher they went. I'm not sure if that will be the case again. Unfortunately, I can't commmit for several weeks so I think I might be stuck just watching the prices rise.

we are flying Orlando to Dublin in Sept and kept waiting for prices to go down but instead they went up so we booked last week for almost 900.00 as J62 said "With oil prices now over $116/bbl I would not expect airfares to decline any time soon"

June fares are peak fares.

I guess between the oil prices and June being peak that explains it. I thought July and August were peak for Ireland due to the weather and school being closed. March or April would be a good idea for 2012 but not this year. I'm also not sure about how damp and cold it is that early in the spring. I was hoping to be comfortable when we are out walking around.

it can be damp and cold in June, July or August too. Ireland/the UK are not places that you can plan based on weather. Nothing if not changeable. It <i>might</i> be warmer when visiting in July than in April - or not.

It's $1400 from Portland to Paris with my dates of late May to mid June. $800 sounds like a bargain to me. Grab it and save money on lodging or food and you can average it all out in the cost of the trip.
