Copenhagen Hotel Recommendation

We've booked a four-day trip to Copenhagen in late May and I'm looking for a nice, moderately-priced hotel to stay in. There don't seem to be that many featured in the guide books, including Fodors.

While we wouldn't rule out an international chain hotel, it would be good to stay in one that had a bit of Danish character to it.

Hope someone out there can help!

I assume you have read all the TripAdvisor reviews of Copenhagen hotels.

If you are going in the high summer, my recommendation is that you get a hotel that has some air conditioning, "character" or not.

Stayed last winter for 3 nights at the
Admiral Hotel ( www.admiralhotel.dk )

Very nice place on the "docks" within walking distance of town center.

I'm not sure of your price range, but I stayed at the 71 Nyhavn about a year and a half ago. It's in Nyhavn, on the canal. I loved the hotel, very cozy, great breakfast. I have seen posts on Trip Advisor from people who did NOT like this hotel and I figured out the reason. There are two sections to this hotel. There is a section that you reach from an elevator on the lobby level and one you reach from an elevator on the lower level, right outside the breakfast room. It seems the section reached from the lobby level has been renovated and the other section is older with very small rooms. I was in the newer section and my room was great. Very large tiled bathroom, and my room was big enough for a desk, a double bed, and a small sofa. I know they have a website so you might check it out and the do run specials. The location is wonderful. Short walk to the square where the bus stop and metro are, and the walking street starts at the square and also the gib department store Magazine is on the square. Lots of pubs and restaurants also. So, you might check it out.

I stayed at this hotel before it was renovated and turned into a boutique hotel, but the location is perfect. If you look for reviews, you have to make sure it's for the newly renovated version of this hotel:
http://www.hotel27.dk

However, I consider that to be very pricy, by my standards.

I found a good deal for a Best Western (the Best Western Hebron in my case) on the http://www.bestwestern.com site for my next stay in Copenhagen. Ironically, I found I got the best rate if I booked exactly 3 nights, because that gives you access to a 3 nights for the price of 2 rate. Looking for 4 nights resulted in a significantly higher price. So try looking up 3 nights and seeing the rates. If you want to book that hotel, have your partner book a single night at the regular rate.

With a late May stay, I think it's pretty safe to go without A/C.

We've stayed in a number of hotels in Copenhagen---the Grand, the Alexandra, the Admiral. All of the were nice, and none of them is inexpensive---I'm not sure they would even qualify as "moderate", but they are by Copenhagen standards. I see the negative reviews of these places on TA and can't believe they are talking about the same place.

My favorite of the three was the Admiral---we had a loft suite with a view out to the canal. We ended up there when the hotel we booked---the Strand---was full and they found us another room close by. I think we ended up with a much nicer place.

One place I have seen recommended by many travelers is the Ibsen, but we haven't stayed there because I don't like the location as much as the ones named above.

I would recommend you not stay at the Square. I was just there and found the room (a superior) to be scary-small, even for Europe, and filthy (mold in the bathroom, whitish stains on the furniture). It felt like a 2-star and the employees were most unsympathetic. I was told the rooms are cleaned every SIX months.

I stayed there based on the fairly good reviews it gets on tripadvisor, which made it all the more shocking to me to see how it really was. The only good things about it are the location and the breakfast. The hotel's Web pics are definitely not an accurate representation.

I stayed at 71 Nyhavn as well a few years ago and loved it. It was part of what made that weekend break in Copenhagen one of my favourite trips of all time. It had a lot of charm and character, and the surrounding area was interesting. My room was quite small and I seem to recall it had a lower than average ceiling (not heading knockingly low but it just seemed a little low), so I would recommend it to claustrophic giants. Otherwise, go for it.
