Bamberg, Germany

I'll be staying in Bamberg for 9 days. I see there is much to see in Bamberg, but is it 9 days worth. Any suggestions for towns close by that may be off the beaten path, but a great place to visit?

IMO there are not 9-days' worth unless you really, really, REALLY like drinking beer!

How are you traveling? Car? Train?

We spent 3 full days in Bamberg and just about saw everything. However, there is alot in the area:

Amberg
Bayreuth
Coburg
Nuremberg

Also, if you have a car, there are a couple of small wine towns around Wurzburg that we loved -- Dettelbach and Iphofen. (Note: these may be on the train line, but I'm not sure.)

If you have time on your hands, perhaps you could see if the photo studio that took this picture still exists and if they have anything on file that would help tracing that family:

Bamberg probably does not have 9 days of "sights" but that doesn't mean it isn't worth staying 9 days. After all, a rural Agriturismo in Tuscany isn't worth 7 days unless you want to relax in a rural Agriturismo for 7 days, right?

There are a lot of terrific places to visit in Franconia around Bamberg - will you have a car or rely on the train?

Why the question?

Regensburg is worth a visit in that little corner of the world - home to the oldest Wurstküche (sausage kitchen) on earth!

Unless you have a car to travel around, 9 days is too much.

I would also recommend a trip to Kulmbach. It can easily be reached by train from Bamberg and makes a great day trip. Beuatiful castle with some interesting museums and it is also a great beer town.

I spent 8 nights in an apartment in Bamberg just this May, taking daytrips.
Click on my name (in blue) to read my trip report about Bamberg and nearby towns that we visited! I loved it!

Thank you so much. I am visiting someone in Bamberg, so that's where I'll be for the duration.

Various interesting towns are nearby--Würzburg, where you can see the gorgeous Residenz, Regensburg, Rothenburg, Nürnberg. All are worth seeing, and all are on train routes.
