Bamberg, Germany
I'll be staying in Bamberg for 9 days. I see there is much to see in Bamberg, but is it 9 days worth. Any suggestions for towns close by that may be off the beaten path, but a great place to visit?

We spent 3 full days in Bamberg and just about saw everything. However, there is alot in the area:
Amberg
Bayreuth
Coburg
Nuremberg
Also, if you have a car, there are a couple of small wine towns around Wurzburg that we loved -- Dettelbach and Iphofen. (Note: these may be on the train line, but I'm not sure.)

If you have time on your hands, perhaps you could see if the photo studio that took this picture still exists and if they have anything on file that would help tracing that family:

Bamberg probably does not have 9 days of "sights" but that doesn't mean it isn't worth staying 9 days. After all, a rural Agriturismo in Tuscany isn't worth 7 days unless you want to relax in a rural Agriturismo for 7 days, right?
There are a lot of terrific places to visit in Franconia around Bamberg - will you have a car or rely on the train?

Regensburg is worth a visit in that little corner of the world - home to the oldest Wurstküche (sausage kitchen) on earth!
