Amsterdam construction

Are there any particularly noisey/disrupted areas currently under construction? Visiting October 2011. Should lodging be avoided in any certain area/neighborhood that is under construction?

Thank you

There is still a lot of work going on for the new noord-zuid metro line - around the station, and along Rokin and Vijzelstraat are the main construction areas.
Marnixstraat has some road works going on until November too.
But neither should affect you.

There was a big fire yesterday on Keizersgracht which destroyed a building there - that could be the site of work by October.

Of course there could be other things in the planning which will show up later, but I wouldn't worry unduly about it.
There is no major building work going on in the centre - other than possibly that one building on the Keizersgracht,.

Thank you hetismih! We are looking at lodgings on Herengracht near Central Station. Sounds like it won't be affected by construction.

to avoid constant noise at night avoid at all costs the Leidesplein area where young folk mill about to late at night and there is the constant clanging of trams in this major tram interchange.

Herengracht is a quiet canal with about the only noise IME being that of speeding taxis scooting along the narrow streets lining each side of the canal. A pretty pretty location and a great location - the farther away from Central Station the better as trains roll thru it day and night and inevitably make some noise.
