A recent poster mentioned internal construction currently happening at Centraal Station which involved escalators being out of service. Can someone tell me if it's still going on and how extensive it is? I'd be coming into Amsterdam most likely on an ICE from Cologne and would like to minimize the inconvenience if possible. Thanks.

On the 11th of November when I left Amsterdam the construction was in full swing and it didn't look as if it would be finished any time in the very near future. All the escalators have been temporarily replaced by stairs and the doors at the very front of the building have been covered over. Since you do not say when you will be arriving it is hard to advise further but if your arrival is within the next couple of weeks I would bet you'll see the construction continuing.

The escalators have been moved to the finished section of the train station.

Construction is going to last a few years, to completely renovate the interior and to integrate with the Subway.

Though I pride myself in taking only luggage that I can easily handle myself, even the smaller suitcases can be an almighty drag when forced to deal with stairs!
