Vieques-Wyndham Martineau Bay Resort
Has anyone been to Wyndham Martineau Bay Resort? We are considering going there for our honeymoon. Reviews by Tripadvisor.com have been mixed. They say food is overpriced and rooms not cleaned properly by some reviews. Our honeymoon will be in april '05

Have you checked out www.vieques-island.com? Great website on Vieques.
We are headed to Vieques in March and from the research I have done it seems that most people prefer the guesthouses over the Wyndham. I think that the Wyndham is on the North side of the island and the best beaches are on the south side of the island. After much research we decided on the Hacienda Tamarindo. Also in the running were the Inn on the Blue Horizon and Hix Island House.
(For some reason I couldn't see the other replies to your post - so I apologize if there is duplication!)

We stayed at Wyndham Martineau Bay in Oct 2003 and February 2004. It is very nice and the only resort on Vieques. If you go to the Puerto Rico Forum Craibbean-on-line.com and scroll down to around 7 Nov 2003 and April 4 2004 you will find my detailed trip reports. Good idea to join Wyndham by Request where they post specials for members. Doesn't cost anything. Martineau Bay usually offers stay three nights get fourth free. You will definitely need a car on Vieques. Feel free to e-mail me for another suggestion. Address is on COL posts.

To maximize romance and intimacy, try smaller guesthouses--- like a very new one called Tres Sirenas in Rincon ... another new one in Rincon is Club Bon Accord has not opened yet, but might be a great find! Also, a bit easier to get to than Vieques... fly direct to Aguadilla from Newark on Continental or JetBlue.

Yes, we were there a few months ago and were miserable. Two of our three rooms were on the ground floor and were terribly moldy. The manager didn't even apologize when we complained. He said it was a chronic problem for the hotel. The rooms were absolutely nothing special. Except for the odd bathtub in the middle of the room, they were pretty much like a typipcal Marriott. Also, while the rooms were clean enough, the hallways were filthy, and the maids had a habit of dumping dirty towels and laundry on the rooms' porches and leaving them all day. the location of the hotel is just bad. It is completely isolated. If it had a good beach, that wouldn't be a problem, but since the beach is tiny, windy and unusuable, you have to go someplace every day. That gets old. You will not want to sit around the pool either. There is a lot of noise and the grease from the beach snack bar blows everywhere. The restaurant is poor -- service is very bad and the menu is unsuitable. Who wants to go to the islands and eat salmon. They need to get some local suppliers. We went to the dock in town and saw the fishermen coming in, so fresh is available.WE had some really bad meals there and sending the bad food back cost us hours of delay. All food in the Caribbean is overpriced, so I won't complain about that. While there are some good restaruants around the island, you probably won't want to make a long drive over difficult roads every night. The easiest place from the Wyndham is Isabel Segundo. In this month's Gourmet magazine, there was an overglorified article about Vieques in which the author raved about Media Luna Restaurant in Isabel Segundo. She said they went there twice during their stay. So did we. It was fantastic. Other guests at the Wyndham told us they had booked a table for every night at Media Luna. What does this say? The Wyndham's restaurant is poor and the drive to anywhere else is too long and complicated to make a night. All in all, the complications and distractions do not make for a relaxing vacation. I would avoid not only the Wyndham, but Vieques altogether.

I read the above posting prior to our trip a few weeks ago, so I was appropriately on guard. We heeded the advice about the ground floor rooms and bargained for a top floor room. It made all the difference -- we had a great view and a really nice experience. It's not a super luxury hotel, but we weren't paying super luxury prices either, as we actually booked a garden view internet rate. They upgraded us without too much trouble. Definitely join Wyndham By Request before booking-- it seems to have an impact when you check in.
That said, we spent most of our time exploring the island by scooter and not alot of time at the hotel. We had such a great time cruising around to some really beautiful and remote beaches that we will definitely go again. even if the Wyndham isn't the "top of the top", we had a fun time.
Note: We highly recommend you rent a car or scooters WAY IN ADVANCE as they sell out.
