Questions re: Grand Cayman Westin
Hi,
Couple of questions about the Westin in GC:
1.) How are the rooms, specifically the lower categories? Big enough to spend 7 days comfortably?
2.) I have read several people complaining about the fact that when the hotel books conventions, regular guests can not use the pool. Has anyone had a stay where this did NOT happen?
3.)What sorts of shops/restaurants/water activities are within walking distance here?
4.) Can you get a small fridge for your room to fill with waters, sodas, beers, etc...or are you stuck with the minibar?
Thanks!

Been there twice----splendid location---rooms are a little small but the location makes up for that. Had use of the pool both times. GC is a little pricey. Water sports are right there are Capt Marvins across the street----can't remember on the fridge. This is not a budget location or hotel---have your bucks ready.

stayed there 2 years ago and loved it. We had two rooms and both were lovely. Totally enjoyed the pool and the beach. One night there was a wedding where they cordoned off part of the pool, but it was just lovely on the whole. We're big travellers and I'd go back.

1.The rooms are big enough to stay in for a week.
2.Our experience was that two days out of the seven that we were there, conventions prohibited you from using the pool area.
3.We accomplished some good shopping within a reasonable walking distance for jewelry. The bus takes you into downtown for a nominal fee and comes about every five minutes. There were some good restaurants around. The Lone Star(Mexican), Eats(traditional American) Deckers(all you can eat lobster, etc), so lots of choices. I do recommend the Champagne Sunday brunch at Ferdinand's, which is at the Westin. It's served from 11:30am - 2:00pm. Be prepared for the staff to be slow in arriving and getting set up. Once that's done, the food is good. BTW, the lobby bar is a huge disappointment in the evening. Very stuffy place for a nightcap and piano music. Red sail sports is located right there next to the beach.
4. I believe that you are able to rent a small fridge for your room.
Our own opinion is that we don't like the way they operate the hotel and believe a condo offers a more superb time and is a much better value.

I'll be returning to Cayman for the 7th time in the last 10 years in March. I stayed at the Westin once in March 2000.
I'm an experienced world traveler and can say without hesitation that the service at the GC Westin was by far the worst ever experienced at an upscale hotel. I had three very unpleasant encounters with the front desk staff (Europeans, not Caymanians).
Upon return to the states, I contacted corporate HQ and (probably because they thought I was too good a customer to lose)they ended up comping my stay. I would have preferred to pay and avoid the grief.
In any event, I haven't stayed at any Westin since.
