Is Malliouhana as nice as Cap Juluca?

We have never been to Anguilla and we cannot get a room at Cap juluca for the time we will be there(booked our tickets, then called CJ back to book room and they said they had no rooms left).I called the Malliouhana and I can get a room there but no one mentions it here on the boards. Is it awful? My husband and I are quite discerning when we travel and everyone seems to say CJ is the best. Should we pay a penalty and postpone the trip from April to July to stay at CJ? Has anyone stayed at Malliouhana? Please try to advise. Thanks to all and happy travels to all. PS- How is the weather generally in April?

I actually think that Malliouhana is even lovelier than Cap (& certainly less crowded). It has a certain "old money" elegance and ambience. Very understated, luxurious with fabulous service. The beach directly below the resort is not as nice as Cap's but Meads Bay is right next door & is my personal favorite on the island. Haven't been to the new spa but have heard that it's the last word! You can't go wrong & you won't be disappointed. (Wait 'til you see a sunset from the bar! Cap what???)

The biggest difference IMO is the beach. Cap's is one of the best private resort beaches in the world. Malli's is good but doesn't really compare, and none of the rooms have easy beach access. Also, the water on Malli's side of the island is rougher, and the view from CJ is across to the beautiful mountains of St. Martin, which is really pretty at night with the twinkling lights over the water.

As for rooms, CJ's are a bit nicer IMO, but that's by no means a reason not to stay at Malli. Frankly none of the resorts on Anguilla have rooms which can match the quality of rooms at places like Sandy Lane, Ocean Club PI, and the new Carlisle Bay on Antigua. And there are a dozen hotels in Hawaii with nicer rooms than those at any of the Anguillian resorts. They're nice, but not spectacular.

My bottom line?
I'd go ahead and stay at Malliouhana. Get a feel for the island (please select some of the better restaurants--they're worth it) and visit both CJ and CuisinArt.
If you like what you find, return another time.

Malli is a very nice hotel. We were faced with the same dilema one year, split our time between the two, as CJ has become so popular. We did book a junior suite, it was huge, very nice, and did have access to the very private Turtle Cove. I did miss the huge bathrooms at CJ, and the powerful shower. I have to laugh as I read your post, is is awful. Far from it! The new spa looks fantastic! Go enjoy, it is a wonderful spot. I liked it better than the new Carlisle Bay in Antigua, because the beach is much better!

You say Cap Juluca said they had no rooms left, have you tried going through a wholesaler?

Why not try Cuisinart? Stayed there last April and it was great. We also stayed at CJ 3 years ago and I feel the rooms at CA are even better than CJ. Plus CA has that gorgeous pool right in the middle of the property. A great spot I don't think you will be disappointed.

Yes, I agree with Maryella, Cuisinart is a great spot. I know it books up fast too, and they have a great rate for after April 16th. You should look into that hotel too. Its on a fantastic beach, with the lovely view of St. Martin.

My husband I had been going to Anguilla for the 1st 10 years since Malliouhana and Cap Juluca were opened. We have to say that both are on spectacular beaches and the accomodations were lovely. We have stayed in Mallie's main building with an ocean view room - as well as the Jr. Suites over turtle cove. I would stay in any accomodation at this property. It is very low key and has excellent service. We went back for almost 10 years straight. When Cap opened we split our time to try it - We stayed at Cap Juluca when construction was still going on - our room was in my opinion dark - I think some of bigger room/suites with more windows would be nicer. We have many fond memories of Anguilla - it a special island - the best beaches and has the many dining options make it. I would stay at either but I would have to say that I actually preferred Malliohana. I would describe it as quite, elegance. We plan on going back this coming year! Once you've been Anguilla you're hooked - there is nothing like it!!!! Go and enjoy!
