Punta Cana has beautiful pristine beaches. The all inclusive resorts are usually very nice. It all depends on what you want. If you want to relax and stay in a resort all day or get out and do stuff. There are many excursions available. If you want to do some partying with the locals my suggestion would be to not stay at a large resort. If your looking for alot of beach activities Cabarete is a good choice. If your looking for some of the best bars and restaurants in the country go to the capital, Colonial Zone. It all depends on what your looking for.
There is lots of snorkeling in all parts of the island.
Check here and look under the adventure sports, water sports pages for more info.

We were in the D.R. last March. Stayed at the Barcelo Bavaro Caribe. Yes, I would recommend it to friends. (The D.R. isn't our favourite Caribbean destination though). It's a 4* AI resort. Most AI are large complexes where you stay at one but get to use the rest. Check out Debbie's Reviews - that is the best source of information.
Snorkelling in D.R. Only worthwhile in the LaRomana area I'm told. Certainly not in Punta Cana where we were.

To answer your question, Punta Cana has great beaches. When on holidays, you decide your schedule - relaxation for your daughter after graduation???!!!! The Barcelo has excellent nightly entertainment + 2 discos. Yes, you can relax on the Beach (except during the water aerobics class).
