Bugs at Biras Creek
I have read some great things about Biras Creek, but one post I read on another site said that bugs were a huge problem (I'm guessing mosquitoes, etc.). That post was over a year old. Can anyone who has stayed there more recently give me an idea of whether this is a problem? Also, if we go, it will be in November of 2005. Any idea whether any bug problem may be seasonal?
Thanks.
Thanks.

We've gone quite a lot in November and also April and never had much of a bug problem at Biras or the BVI. Mosquitos might come out if there's several days of rain, but that's usually right at dusk. The resort has bug spray, but we've really never had to use it.

Just because you read one report that mentioned a "bug problem" at Biras Creek doesn't mean very much by itself. The appearance of bugs (especially mosquitos) at Biras Creek or at any resort on any Caribbean island, for that matter, is dependent upon so many variables that one cannot accurately predict if and when they might be a problem nor are past occurances any indication of what will happen in the future. This is the tropics and there will always be the possibility of chance encounters with the "little pests". As ScubaMom says mosquitos are more likely to appear if there have been several days of unusally persistant rains. If, however, there happens to be constant breezes after those rains the insects will most likely be blown away and not cause any problems. The opposite can happen during drought times, if there are no breezes you are likely to encounter a few bugs even though there has been little or no rain. Add to the mix that some people's chemical make-up (like my spouse's) is such that they attract mosquitos while other's (like me) are hardly bothered. So you see there is really no telling what will happen during the particular week or so you will be visiting. Here are a few hints that will minimize your chances of being bother by bugs during your stay: a) bring along some insect repellant (preferably one containing Deet) and apply it to your arms and ankles if you are planning to hike in the hills during the day or walk along the beaches at dusk, b) avoid using sweet smelling perfumes or aftershaves (while the effect of these on your significant other is open to debate they will definately lure the bugs closer to you)and, c) don't leave the doors to your room wide open, especially at night and with the lights on.
