I take a trip with one child each year and my 17 yr. old DS reminded me that he is overdue for a trip this summer. With him heading off to college in the future, I would like to continue this tradition this summer despite the economy. He wants to go to Canada but can't make up his mind, we would have about 4 /5 nights so which place would be best for a visit with a 17 yr. old?

As a Torontonian, I'll probably catch Hell for this but for a 17YO, do Montréal. He'll appreciate Toronto later in life.

I would agree with knickerbocker. Montreal is so unlike anything that he will have experienced in North America. You might even persuade him to learn a little French so that he can understand street signs etc. If you can fit it in, a side trip to Quebec City is not out of the question and would be an excellent experience as well. Montreal for sure.

Thank you for your help. Now do you have any hotel recommendations or neighbors where we should stay. Below $300 is my price range and I am pretty good at getting deals so going lower is not a problem. Just want it to be nice and in a good location.

Because my daughter lives in Montreal, I have no personal experience of hotels there. However, I am tempted to say that in Old Montreal, which is the area that you should stay in, you will not find a bad one. I have heard very good reports about the Hotel Nelligan. If you google Montreal Hotels,Old Town you will get loads of information about what is on offer. There are many reviews from Trip Advisor there which are invaluable. If you think about going to Quebec City, check out the Via Rail Canada web site for train info. The railway station is in the centre of the city and is very convenient.

I highly recommend using Priceline for the hotel. We have had wonderful luck in Montreal with their hotels.

Thank you all for your help. I did see on biddingfortravel.com that priceline.com was giving some good hotels at great prices for montreal. Hopefully I can pull of this trip since next year he heads off to college.
