I am planning a trip to Bali and am in the process of selecting flights. The flight I am looking at goes from DAY (Dayton, OH) to ORD (Chicago, O'Hare) to ICN (Incheon, S. Korea) to DPS (Denpasar, Bali). I am pretty new to international flights and am concerned about layover times and customs.

I would have a 1hr 25min layover in ORD to go from American Airlines to Korean Air. Is this enough time? What "steps" need to be taken in ORD? Do I need to go through security again? switch terminals? customs?

Also, my layover in ICN is 1hr 55min this time staying on Korean Air. Again, is this enough? What are the steps?

On the way home the trip is reversed layover in ICN (Korean air both legs) is 2hr. 15min, and layover in ORD (Korean air to united airlines) is 3hr 55min. Again, is this enough time?

I appreciate any information. I am really excited to have the opportunity to do some international travel, but a little concerned. Thanks so much.

The only connection that would be troubling to me is the one in Chicago on your way to Bali. You would need to leave the American terminal and take the shuttle train to the international terminal for the Korean flight, going through security again at the int'l terminal. 1:25 would usually be sufficent, but the DAY-ORD flight is on American Eagle, and they are known for non-punctuality. And if you miss the Korean flight, you'd have to wait until the following day.

Otherwise, you'll be fine. ICN is a very simple airport for changing flights, and you will not have to go through security in either direction.

Odds are it will be ok butif you have any delay on any kind

at ORD you might miss and they might sell your seat

if they can if you are late at all and it would be legal.

My rule of thumb MINIMUM 2 hours prior for international

connexions.

I too would be concerned with the Korean air flight out of Chicago.

You will need to check in with Korean - they aren't a oneworld alliance member with AA, so you won't be able to checkin all the way from Dayton. You will be able to check your bags through.

I flew Korean last fall but don't recall if I was able to do online checkin. Getting to the KAL desk by the check-in cut off time would be my biggest concern.

If you can do online checkin you'd just need to be at the KAL gate before they close it for departure.

Wait, hold that thought. You may need to give KAL your baggage tag info from AA so that they can electronically & physically retrieve the bag from AA - not sure exactly how that works, but I'm thinking you may need to see the KAL counter regardless.

Honestly if you are looking at American Eagle flights DAY-ORD I would fly into ORD the day before

I believe AA allows same day standby for either free or small fee. Check AA schedules and see if you can get on an earlier flight out of Dayton on the same day. You may need to wait until that day to make the change.

Thanks all for your help! I will see if I can find a flight with a longer layover, or look into going into chicago a day early.
