The Pickle Guys

Lower East Side

In the late 1800s, pickle sellers were a dime a dozen—or to be more exact, a penny a cucumber, which went up to around a nickel by the early 1900s: it was cheap snack, and there were pickle vendors selling their wares from pushcarts and giant barrels all over the Lower East Side. It's said that at one point there were 200 pickle sellers on Essex Street alone, but these days there's only one left: The Pickle Guys.

Don't miss indoor shops such as La Princesa de Cristal, which sells sparkling jewelry, etched glass, and Disney figurines cast in crystal, and La Tienda Encantada with fine jewelry, leather goods, and colorful accessories. Outside on the promenade is El Ranchito del Norte, a bazaar well stocked with similar items.

Pop Up Grocer

Greenwich Village

After doing a series of pop-ups, as the name suggests, this unique, colorful food market has decided not to pop-down. Thank goodness for that. After all, this is no ordinary market. The concept here is to stock the shelves with unique treats and snacks—things you might not find at your grocery store back home, but instead, might see at a small corner market while traveling somewhere in the world. You may not recognize any of the names, but you're certain to be dazzled by a new brand of coffee, candy, chips, or soda.

Port Clyde General Store

After suffering a devastating fire in September 2023, the General Store has reopened, albeit on a smaller scale, while they rebuild. Look for the green clapboard building with red trim a few steps to the right of the ferry landing. This is an old-time, honest-to-goodness general store, with wide-plank floors and an inventory that offers a little bit of everything: groceries, pastries, candy, wines, liquor—even live lobsters. Outside, a sign touts the "Native Ice" for sale.

Queen Anne Book Company

It seems every Seattle neighborhood has its beloved bookstore, and Queen Anne’s favorite is no exception. The selection is thoughtfully curated, blending popular titles with unexpected finds, and the well-read staff love talking books. They shine in their recommendations for kids’ titles and regional reads. Even better, the shop is attached to Queen Anne Coffee Co., so you can grab a latte, settle onto the patio, and dive right into your new purchase.

Queen Kaahumanu Center

Maui's largest shopping center has more than 100 stores and restaurants, a movie theater, and a food court. Its attractive rooftop, with its manta ray–like umbrella shades, is easy to spot. For surf-inspired gear, visit The Foam Company and Shapers. Other stops include Macy's, PacSun, Bath & Body Works, and American Eagle Outfitters. In addition to its retail-therapy offerings, the mall hosts a creative, monthly lineup of events, including a farmers' market, concerts, and car shows.
