Desert Hills Premium Outlets

Fodor's Choice

About 20 miles west of Palm Springs lies one of California's largest outlet malls, which hawks everything from bikinis and bags to sunglasses and stilettos. The complex's 180 stores include Jimmy Choo, Samsonite, Levi's, Saint Laurent, J. Crew, Armani, Gucci, lululemon, and Prada.

Las Vegas North Premium Outlets

Downtown Fodor's Choice

The upscale mix at this racetrack-shaped Downtown outlet mall includes 175 stores, all of which offer merchandise discounts of some sort. Among the more common stores are a few high-fashion boutiques such as Dolce & Gabbana and Salvatore Ferragamo. Saks Off Fifth and a giant Nike store anchor the mall, and a Cheesecake Factory restaurant offers a good place to have lunch. Three parking garages afford easy access to the mall but tend to fill up quickly; valet parking is available in the main garage.

Sawgrass Mills

Fodor's Choice

This alligator-shaped megamall draws millions of shoppers a year to its collection of over 350 outlet stores, including more than 70 luxury brand outlets like Burberry, GUCCI, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, The Company Store, Tory Burch, and Versace. According to the mall, it's the second-largest attraction in Florida—second only to Walt Disney World. Although this may sound like an exaggeration, prepare for crowds and to spend a full day here.

Woodbury Common Premium Outlets

Fodor's Choice

More than 220 designer outlets fill the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, a sprawling shopping complex about a 20-minute drive north of Bear Mountain. Many of the top fashion retailers and designers are here, including Diane von Furstenberg, J. Crew, Elie Tahari, and Salvatore Ferragamo. Beyond clothing, the goods range from shoes and leather goods to housewares and jewelry, with outlets for Nike, Longchamp, and Williams-Sonoma. Deals can be found, but don't expect everything to be a bargain. One of the most popular destinations in the state, the center draws about 10 million visitors a year. The parking lots fill quickly and traffic can be a tangle on weekends (and certain holidays).

Animal Rescue Fund Thrift Shop

High-end treaures can be found here at bargain prices, including antique furniture and "household smalls" like china and lamps, paintings, and designer and everday clothing. The items are mostly secondhand, but castoffs in the Hamptons can be pretty fabulous; merchants donate new clothing too. Jackie's Barking Bargains is a spot for special savings, including items that may need some TLC. All proceeds help subsidize the operating costs of the animal shelter in Wainscott. New stock goes on show on Tuesday and Thursday.

Carlsbad Premium Outlets

This outdoor shopping center contains more than 80 outlet stores, including designer brands like Coach, Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Nike.

The Church Mouse

Many high-end resale boutique owners grab their merchandise at this thrift store run by the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, in business since 1970. The Mouse accepts cheese from October to June, Monday–Saturday, 10–4. The store's end-of-season sale draws crowds that line the block. You can feel good about your purchases here: proceeds go to regional nonprofits.

Empire Outlets

St. George

A five-minute walk from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in St. George, Empire Outlets is the first and only outlet center in New York City. Constructed with the intention of luring Manhattanites and tourists to Staten Island, the outdoor shopping mall has since fallen victim to the increasing decline of brick-and-mortar retail shopping, with many empty spaces for rent. Even their culinary food hall struggles to keep vendors. That said, Empire Outlets endures with factory outlets for Old Navy, Banana Republic, Levi's, Nike, and Nordstrom Rack, along with eateries Shake Shack, Wasabi Steak & Sushi, Taiwanese bakery chain Bake Culture, and the rooftop Clinton Hall Beer Garden, serving juicy burgers and 20 rotating draft beers.

The Garment District

Kendall Square

Step into this 12,000-square-foot warehouselike building through the famous pink door and head to the second level to find a massive selection of vintage, used, and new clothing and accessories. Boston Costume, the sister business on the first floor, draws thrift pickers to the back room to paw through an 850-pound bale of clothes that's dumped on the floor each day (twice on Saturday and Sunday); items are sold for $2 per pound. Students crowd the entire store year-round, and everyone comes at Halloween for that perfect costume. They're also known for their vintage wears, dating back to the ’50s for as retro as you please.

Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets

This outlet capitalizes on its proximity to Disney (it's at the confluence of Interstate 4, State Road 535, and International Drive). Although it's easier to see from the highway than to enter (and parking is tedious and scarce), some smart shoppers have lunch on International Drive and take the I-Ride Trolley right to the front entrance (it runs every 15 minutes). The center's design makes this almost an open-air market, so walking can be pleasant on a nice day. You'll find Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Prada, Adidas, Tory Burch, Tommy Hilfiger, and Salvatore Ferragamo, among more than 160 stores.
