Harbourside Inn

$$ | 48 Harborside Rd., Northeast Harbor, ME, USA Fodor's Choice

Originally part of a summer colony, each guest room is unique at this comfortably classic shingled 1888 hillside inn—run by the same family since 1977—with hardwood floors and Oriental rugs throughout, vintage and antique furnishings, an intriguing map collection, spacious guests rooms, a few suites, and no TVs anywhere (by design!). It's a short walk to the village and an easy base for exploring Acadia National Park as local trails just uphill lead there. Many of the maps are of the park and many rooms have original claw-foot tubs and marble sinks. Some even have kitchenettes, and all have sitting areas.

Pros

  • Touches like courtesy dishes, glasses, and utensils (in the parlor but for use anywhere at the inn)
  • Continental breakfast (fresh-baked treat, granola bars, and fresh fruit) is served in the delightful, window-lined porch
  • Most guest rooms have a working fireplace, as does the parlor, and there's a fit pit outside

Cons

  • Close to but not on the water, no water views
  • Some third floor rooms (no elevator)
  • Three-night minimum

Harmon Guest House

$$$ | 227 Healdsburg Ave., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA Fodor's Choice

A boutique sibling of the H2Hotel two doors away, this downtown delight that debuted in 2018 earned instant LEED Gold status for its eco-friendly construction and operating practices. Totally 21st century in its use of concrete, steel, glass, and (often reclaimed) wood, the Harmon Guest House, named for Healdsburg’s founder, Harmon Heald, echoes mid-century modern design with clean lines and cool sophistication. In the guest rooms, simple wood platform beds sit on light-oak floors, with headboardlike, dark, quilted panels attached to the white walls providing a contrast. Rooms all have window seats with views of local landmark Fitch Mountain, Foss Creek (whose restoration the hotel has participated in), or a bamboo-filled interior courtyard. The public areas include a creek-side deck. The room rate includes a continental breakfast.

  • Novel room design
  • Connecting rooms and suites

Cons

Hawaii Island Retreat at Ahu Pohaku Hoomaluhia

$$$$ | 250 Maluhia Rd., Kapaau, HI, 96719, USA Fodor's Choice

Here, above the sea cliffs in North Kohala, sustainability meets luxury without sacrificing comfort: the resort generates its own solar and wind-turbine power, harnesses its own water, and grows much of its own food. Beautiful floors are made from sustainably harvested woods, and rooms take advantage of natural light and ventilation to keep energy usage low. Surrounded by 50 acres, 20 of which are a dedicated conservation area, the retreat feels both luxe and completely hidden from the world. Handsome rooms have high ceilings, elegant doors, crown molding, and private balconies. Three cliff-side hales (houses) with kitchenettes offer ocean views. More affordable options are available at the retreat's Yurt Village, which includes access to the saltwater infinity pool and fitness center. Breakfast is sourced from the resort's garden supply, augmented by island-fresh ingredients from local farms.

Pros

  • Stunning location
  • Emphasis on organic food
  • Affordable yurts are one lodging option

Cons

  • Somewhat isolated and not within walking distance of restaurants

Hawks Cay Resort

$$$ | 61 Hawks Cay Blvd., Duck Key, FL, 33050, USA Fodor's Choice

The 60-acre, Caribbean-style retreat with a full-service spa and six restaurants has plenty to keep the kids occupied (and adults happy). Activities at the sprawling resort  include fishing charters, snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, tennis, pickleball and mini-golf.  A pirate ship with water cannons delights at the family activity center, where there are two family pools and sports fields. Kids can also swim at one of the pools at the main lodge (the other is adults only) or in the protected saltwater lagoon. An in-the-water program lets guests get up close and personal with dolphins. When the older generation wants to head to the spa or out to dinner at fine-dining restaurant Sixty-One Prime, there are supervised programs for kids up to age 12. The spacious rooms and villas have a coastal look. The room rate does not include a hefty daily resort fee, which covers the resort-wide tram and other costs.

Pros

  • Great activities for families
  • Restful spa
  • Full-service marina and dive shop

Cons

  • No real beach
  • Far from Marathon's attractions
  • Resort-wide tram gets busy, so plan to wait or walk far

Hidden Moose Lodge B&B

$$$ | 1735 E. Lakeshore Dr., Whitefish, MT, 59937, USA Fodor's Choice

At the foot of the road that climbs to Big Mountain, this two-story log lodge has a lively ski motif—a child's sled for a coffee table, an antique ski for a handrail. Some of the rooms have their own Jacuzzis, and there's one outdoors as well. Rooms are individually decorated with rough-hewn pine furniture and ironwork, and each has its own entrance off a small deck. The living room's vaulted ceiling creates space for plenty of light and a 20-foot-high fireplace; the scene can be quite social, especially in summer. Breakfasts are a standout, and come evening a glass of wine or bottle of locally brewed beer is on the house. The skier-owners may even share their favorite powder run on Big Mountain.

Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront

$$$$ | 3001 Atlantic Ave., Virginia Beach, VA, 23451, USA Fodor's Choice

This Hilton is the only four-star hotel in Virginia Beach; towering 21 stories over the oceanfront, it has shops, three restaurants, a rooftop bar, and infinity pool. The seafood restaurant, Catch 31, receives consistently good reviews, and there is great outdoor seating overlooking the boardwalk. At night the bar is a happening scene for thirtysomethings. Rooms use muted tan textiles to give the space a warm feeling. Flat-screen TVs are in both bedrooms and the bathrooms. Most rooms have balconies with panoramic views, but if yours lacks a beachfront view, you can always hang out at the rooftop pool with rails of glass looking down to the boardwalk. Recently upgraded, the three floors of the Empyrean Club level have really taken it up a notch: the bathrooms even have built-in TVs in the mirrors. Book early, as the Hilton sells out quickly, even in the off-season.

Pros

  • A luxury hotel with all the amenities
  • Infinity pool on the roof is unique
  • Rocking chairs outside and fire pits at the restaurant are nice places to hang out
