Hotel Van Zandt

$$$ | 605 Davis St., Austin, TX, 78701, USA Fodor's Choice

Popular with groups, from bachelorette parties to corporate weekenders, this Rainey Street hot spot has become a downtown mainstay since opening in 2015. Hotel ZaZa

$$$$ | 5701 Main St., Houston, TX, 77005, USA Fodor's Choice

With flashy, over-the-top decor, the party at the ZaZa never ends. Think taxidermy, chandeliers, prints on prints on prints, video walls, a pool area that rivals Vegas casinos, and lots of lacquer. It can come across as trying too hard, but there's nothing else like it in the city. Eight themed guest suites ("The Magnificent Seven") pay homage to the international jet set, rock stars, and Texas cowboys. The Monarch Restaurant and Lounge has some of the best food in town, but the bar clientele is not always as sophisticated as the diners. The hotel's location at the foot of Hermann Park means all rooms have gorgeous views.

Pros

  • Fun atmosphere
  • Beautiful location
  • Great pool scene

Cons

  • Loud
  • Sort of isolated from the city's after-dark activities

The architects of this courtly hotel, which opened with a splash in 2023, incorporated the redbrick Romanesque Revival–style facade of the 1928 structure that preceded it. Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa

$$$$ | 5001 Coconut Rd., Bonita Springs, FL, 34134, USA Fodor's Choice

This secluded luxury resort, with its marble-and-mahogany lobby and championship golf course, makes a lovely, tropical sanctuary for families who want a refined atmosphere. The resort offers such fun features as an elaborate 3-acre water park, a rock-climbing wall, and a s'mores fire pit. The massive pool area is the largest south of Orlando with four pools, five waterslides, and a lazy river. For something more natural, catch a ferry to the hotel's private island beach that's great for shelling, or rent a kayak and paddle around Estero Bay. Imperial Hotel

$ | 14202 Old Hwy. 49, Amador City, CA, 95601, USA Fodor's Choice

A judicious 2023 makeover broadened the appeal of one-block Amador City's 1879 redbrick hotel without sacrificing the throwback feel of the guest rooms, two with balconies overlooking town. A wooden staircase leads directly from the lobby bar to three second-floor rooms with king beds, three with queens, and all with exposed brick walls and painstakingly sanded original floors. The bathrooms, equipped with period-sensitive fixtures, are stocked with high-quality products. As with the hotel, renovations to the restaurant preserved a sense of the past, with the updated farm-to-fork cuisine providing contemporary travelers additional incentive to book here. A nearby hilltop cottage contains three larger suites. Rates are higher for these, but good views and a quieter setting compensate.

Inn at Abeja

$$$$ | 2014 Mill Creek Rd., Walla Walla, 99362, USA Fodor's Choice

Set on 35 acres of gardens, lawns, and vineyards, the incredibly stylish, beautifully furnished guest cottages and suites have a serene, relaxing, and secluded feel. With names like the Bunk House and the Chicken Coop that pay homage to their use on the original circa-1900 farm, each accommodation is luxuriously appointed and architecturally stunning. The two-story Hayloft Suite, for example, has a grand staircase that leads up to the light-filled living area and a large outdoor deck with expansive views, while the Carriage House Suite has sitting areas on all three levels and two bedrooms with private baths. The huge five-bedroom Farmhouse can accommodate up to 10 guests. Abeja also has its own estate winery and guests are welcomed with a glass of wine on arrival. The Kitchen at Abeja, led by chef Jake Crenshaw, offers several dining choices for guests, including a multicourse prix fixe dinner in the dining room, box lunches, artisan shared plates, and dinner delivered to your suite.

Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm

$$$ | 5281 York Rd., Holicong, PA, 18928, USA Fodor's Choice

Once the home of playwright George S. Kaufman, this remarkable country retreat has a staff that takes a devilish delight in the details. Suites, all named for Kaufman works, are exquisitely furnished with pieces like the ornate carved East Asian canopy bed in the Seven Lively Arts Suite. The 19th-century barn has original touches like wood beams and ladders, while the Manor House, whose original section dates to 1740, features exposed stone walls. Tastefully chosen art and crafts—Mercer tiles, stained glass, luscious textiles, and hand-painted murals—are sprinkled throughout. Pleasing the senses doesn't stop with the eye, however. Wine and cheese are delivered to your door when you arrive, gas fireplaces and whirlpool tubs keep you feeling toasty warm, and the on-site spa (which uses all-natural, organic products) lets you pamper yourself. A delicious breakfast is served in the glass-walled conservatory dining room, where you can also enjoy BYO dinner from Wednesday to Saturday (and brunch on weekends).

Pros

  • Spot-on artistic touches
  • Charm of faithful historic restoration with modern amenities
  • Chef Josh Homacki's tasty meals

Cons

  • An overabundance of breakfast and snacks is a con if you are watching your waistline
