Which towns on the Washington DC Metro lines have economical family hotels
We're headed to DC this summer and don't want to wrangle the parking issues. Can someone suggest towns that might have reasonably priced hotels nearby? For example, is Manasses on the Metro line?
We'd appreciate hotel recommendations. We generally stay in Hampton Inn or Comfort Suites type hotels.
Thank you.

For starters, here's an excellent list that DC expert Repete put together, with commentary:
-- Rosslyn, a top choice just across from Georgetown. Also has easy access to the gem that is Roosevelt Island.
-- Old Town Alexandria. A truly fun place to stay and stroll.
--Crystal City and Pentagon City area. Convenient, safe but not a lot of charm IMO.
--Arlington--???? (many other folks are more familiar)
--Chevy Chase. Wonderful neighborhood on the Red Line. Great shopping and Embassy Suites sits on station. But for price of the ES you could probably Priceline it in the city.
--DT Silver Spring: Hopping area with improved dining scene (esp. Ray's the Classics and Mandalay). American Film Institute. Don't get a cheap hotel here but the new Marriott Courtyard plus the Hilton and Crown Plaza are good values for the DC area.
--There's also a Days Inn off the UDC Red Line stop in NW DC.
--Bethesda. Nice city with lots of good but not great dining.
--College Park: Out of the way and not very Metro convenient
--Rockville: Is there a hotel in the new Town Square? There ought to be. (Love the Fractured Prune treats.) If not, there are a few places (Doubletree now Hilton?) right on the Twinbrook stop and a Marriott near the White Flint stop.
--Gaithersburg: You're getting a long ways out but several have shuttles to Shady Grove.

Last May we stayed at the Arlington Residence Court for 6 nights while touring DC. Great location w/a 5 minute walk to the Courthouse metro station. Hotel was recently remodeled so rooms were new and large. Good bed & shower w/a sm. kitchen. Free hot breakfast & light dinners were provided on the top floor. Able to walk to many restaurants and grocery/deli stores. Nice safe area.
Great value ($179/king) for the DC area & definitely would stay there again.

Here is a Metro map - click on a station to get an artea map. The hotels are indicated by red squares. The bold, black with white arrows indicate the subway escalators. The bold, block "U" shaped are the subway entrance/exit elevators.

I would focus in on the following suburaban Metro Stations. Both convenient and nice areas to be in:

My wife and I stayed at the Hampton Inn and suites in Crystal City which is a two block walk from that metro station and is also an easy two block walk from " restaurant row ". The price averaged out to $170 per night as some nights were more or less expensive depending on the day of the week.

Our family planned a July 4th vacation last year before cancelling due to illness. Look into Hampton Inn & Suites Reagan National Airport. They had great deals, breakfast, 1 block from Metro, and short distance from restaurants.
