Piatti's in the Shores
Jeff's burger for super casual
LJ Shores oceanfront
Barbarella's
Marine room for drinks in bar and apps.
Hotel La Jolla in the shores has great rates and views...Cusp is good at top of high rise.
Estancia LJ is lovely too and they have a shuttle...across from UCSD.
George's in the village or Nine-Ten.
Manhattan's is old school Italian waiters in the Empress.
Crab Catcher on patio or Happy hour on prospect.

Thanks, MoonFish.
We're doing a three generation long weekend in La Jolla Shores. Sunday dinner will be in San Diego at one of my husband's favorite bistro/wine bars.
Italian is always a hit with the grandsons. And we could always do take out to enjoy at 'home' in the rental if we are too exhausted from our days' activities.
We went to George's last year for brunch; will keep it in mind for a nice meal with a waterside setting.

Nanabee, thank you for hotel information and restaurant recommendations! Our first time staying in LaJolla instead of San Diego "proper" so really appreciative of your advice.
When first booking this particular La Jolla location, I thought it would be great for being in easy walking distance to Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. Alas, the coffee is about mile south!

Just for others who may be considering San Diego...
I noticed you said that Coronado is quite pricey. Have you looked at Booking.com? I found several places that I like at pretty reasonable prices in early january; The Marriott, Cherokee Lodge, El Cordova, and (my favorite) 1906 Lodge. Cherokee Lodge is more a B&B, but you have a private bathroom. El Cordova is in a very cool building, across the street from the Dell, and the 1906 Lodge is not only a wonderful restoration of a 1906(!) building, but has amazing food. Coronado has several other budget motels that are perfectly respectable, but not right up near the beach. I con't think there is anyplace in Coronado more than a 15 minute walk to the beach!

My favorite restaurant in the Shores is Piatti's and there is a new place called Galaxy Taco which is more casual and very different Mexican style but I like it.
In the village ( formal and unfortunately a little expensive ) I love Bistro so Marche but they have less expensive lunches. However the food and service is excellent.
Sugar and Scribe is great for breakfast and lunch as is the Cottage.

That's two votes for Piatti's. Thanks! It's on the list for La Jolla Shores.
And thanks, nanabee, for the Galaxy Taco suggestion. We may have to do a fish taco tasting contest...they have fried and grilled versions. In my limited experience, I've never had a fried fish taco.
Bistro du Marche looks like a place we'd enjoy; maybe my husband and I will give it a try after 'the kids' have left.
