We like to split our stay between the North and South Shore to avoid too much driving (both traffic and gas). We rent a cottage on the North Shore. Wonderful privacy and relaxation/close to Kalalau trail & NS beaches. We stay at the Hyatt on the South Shore for a bit of resort pampering. Close to Poipu and Waimea Canyon. The best of both worlds!

The roundabout in Poipu is now open. The Grand Hyatt is miles away from the new construction, and a very relaxing resort.
As for restaurant suggestions, Poipu has the best, children welcome. Keoki's Paradise, Beach House, Tidepools, Plantation Gardens, Roy's.

Update re: dining at Hanalei Bay Resort.
I called the hotel this afternoon, and asked the front desk for official confirmation of the rumors.
The Bali Hai restaurant is NOT re-opening, and there is no plan for a re-opening anytime soon.
But...the bar (Happy Talk Lounge) continues to serve bar food (Buffalo wings, salad, burgers, pupu platter, etc.)

dayandryan I agree with Chuck55 concerning The Kauai Beach Villas, we stayed their as noted in prior post. The central location was perfect, not far from Safeway, Long's Drugs, ABC store for those things we need right now.
One day go North the next South and you will find the part of Kauai that calls to you.
The sun rises just off your lania, it does have an unheated pool (Don't get kicked out of the Hilton's pool as we did).
Concering the Capt. Andy's cruise I didn't see any infants onbroad. I would have put a life vest on my little one and enjoyed the Napali coast.
DH heard airplanes over the Marriott during his conference.

Poipu Shores! You get to hear the waves crashing! We had a 2 bedroom with W/D. Eating out is expensive so we had breakfast on the lanai, packed a picnic lunch for beach hopping (our favorite thing to do in Kauai) and drank our beer and ate sushi (from the grocery store) at sunset on our lanai. Be sure to miss the rush hour traffic 4-6pm. We usually went out to a nice place for drinks at night. The library at the Hyatt! And ate out at Roy's and the Beachhouse. Both great meals!
Do the NaPali coast catamaran - beautiful and includes breakfast and lunch!

Our last visit was at Whalers Cove in unit 123 which is building 1 - right on the ocean, floor 2 and unit 3 -3rd from the end. The thing about building 1 is that the pool is not in front of it so you have nothing in front of you but fabulous sunsets from your amazingly huge lanai.
There is a washer & dryer right in the unit. It's super quiet & Private. We alsways had the pool & spa to ourselves.
I'm not sure I'd take an infant to the Beach House, Tidepools or Roys but that's up to you.
