What to do on a short trip to Boston?

I am traveling to Boston on a business trip for a week. Although I will be in class until 6pm each day, I know there has to be plenty to see and do after that. I will also be staying an extra day so that I can see some sights while I'm in town. What should I NOT miss while I'm there?

The MFA is open until 9:45 on Wednesdays and it is "donation only" after 4.

The Blue Man Group is an incredible show. (Charles Theatre)

You can hang out in Harvard Square and just soak up the atmosphere.

The Aquarium and IMAX is really nice ... but it might take up too much of your time.

The Skywalk at Prudential Center gives an awesome view with an audio presentation. I thought it was great!

Why don't you give us some ideas to what you like to do and then we can assist you better.

The MFA is great, but I prefer the Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum which is nearby.

For such a short visit I'd skip the museum (unless you are really into museums -- in which case don't miss the ISabella Stewart Gardner Museum).

Be sure to visit Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. The Aquarium there is fun. Eat at Legal Seafood while you're down there. Maybe do the Freedom Trail (weather permitting - or dress warm). Stroll down Newbury St, do some upscale shopping at the Prudential Center.

You can rent ice skates at the rink in Cambridge at the Charles Hotel Courtyard and the rink in the Boston Common. Even watching is fun, slip into the hotel for a warm drink!

I wish Caroline would post back. We don't even know WHEN she is going or what she likes to do. I have a lot more suggestions, but I am waiting on her.

If I am reading her post correctly, she is mostly looking for things to do at night (after 6pm) That is why I mentioned the MFA (it makes for a great FREE/CHEAP Wednesday evening) According to the post, she is only taking 1 extra day for site seeing. So that kind of limits the ideas. The Aquarium alone (especially if you add IMAX) can take half a day or more. Unless she really likes aquariums, it is probably too much.

Some sort of tour is a good option. If she happens to be there the 2nd Saturday of the month, the Innovation Odyssey looks FANTASTIC!

Caroline, where are you? We need more info.

I just spent a week in Boston and both the Old State House and Old North Church are gorgeously lit at night. I thought the Italian North End was a fun place to go at night; good eats and Mike's Pastry and Caffe Vittorio for gelato were both bustling; lots of people strolling.

After wandering Faneuil Hall grab an excellent pub dinner at the Black Rose at 160 State St. and stick around for whoever is performing upstairs. It can be a little touristy but I still think it is the best Irish pub in Massachusetts.

Of course the best night of music in town can be found every Friday and Saturday night at 9pm at a little dive bar called Cantab Lounge just west of the Central Square T station at 738 Massachusetts Avenue. Little Joe Cook must be seen to be believed.
