What did you dislike about Rent?
In The Heights has nontraditional score, using Rap, regaeton and salsa as part of the show. Some have described it as "Rent meets West Side Story" in terms of the storyline.
I saw it last week, it was upbeat, energetic and fun.

I knew someone would ask what we disliked about “Rent.” We went in with high expectations and just thought there was nothing special about it. Didn’t love the music or the story—and didn’t feel transported or fully engaged the way we felt from our favorite shows. Obviously, lots of people loved it.
This reminds me of when I saw "Sunday in the Park with George." When the curtain fell on act one, I was so moved I was almost in tears. I thought it was the most magical, emotional, powerful moment of theater I'd ever experienced. But waiting in line for the men's room, the comments from those around me were about how terrible the music was--and how they hated the show!
Guess that’s why they make 32 different flavors ;-)
"Wishful Drinking" will almost definitely be our choice for a non-musical.
